I was watching a video clip about the "Jon and Kate plus Eight" cheating scandal, and this phrase was uttered by a typical worldly newscaster.

She said something along these lines:

"She has eight kids -- which I believe is already an excessive number, at least in this day and age."

It got me thinking -- why is it an excessive number now, but not 80 years ago when MANY families had 7 or more children?

People in their 40's and 50's often have 4 to 8 siblings.

People in their 20's only have 2 siblings, on average.

Why is a small family a requirement of modern life? What happened?

  • I think it's a combination of several factors:

    1. Wage slavery -- a de-facto state of slavery suffered by many, whereby people work and work and barely own anything or get ahead. The banks charging usury is largely responsible for this, but taxes are another part of the problem.

    2. Increase in materialism and lust for pleasure (buying nice stuff, vacations, travel, body shape, convenience, and other carnal pleasure)

    3. Increase in selfishness.

    4. Loss of knowledge of how to live frugally, with common sense, and cheaply.

    5. Loss of the art of raising and DISCIPLINING kids, so that kids become a huge burden these days.

    6. TV pushing items 1-5, and also making kids into selfish gluttons as well.

  • It is the modernization of culture - even in Asia, where large families have always been considered good fortune, families are now limited to a few children - in some places, this is legally enforced.
