I have a question . In Tan publishers book on The Cure' D'Ars on the top page of 312. A Lady goes to M. Vianney and M. Vianney summoned her out of the crowd, "You look sad my child," he said . She was a mother of a large family, pregnant and seeking courage. M. Vianney said to her,"Be comforted..If you only knew the women who will go to hell because they did not bring into the world the children they should have given to the world."

My question is what would cause them to go to hell? This happened about 1845 (?). There was maybe condoms, nothing else that I know. Maybe onanism, or the women just refused their husband. What are your thoughts?

Apart from onanism, what we know as 'NFP', natural family planning, today has been around for centuries; its also known as 'rhythm', or 'the rhythm method'. If a couple used this method of child prevention, against the advise of a priest, or without a truly legitimate reason, one where prudence would be involved, not a loss of trust/ faith in God, one could see how this might be a mortal sin for a Catholic.

NFP as we know it, was not known til 1900 and was not understood full enough, only for fertility. Rhythm was not known til after the 1900 to actually understand to teach and the thermometer was not invented til the late 1800s, I believe.

Right. I should have clarified. Rhythm as used a 100 years ago was not nearly as 'scientific' as it is today.

Why on earth people believe that contraception is something new???
Even primitive Indian tribes did make condom-shaped things from animal skin.
In ancient Egypt they had herbal mixtures placed in side the body that prevented the man's seed from going too far. In the middle east there was drugs that once you took made you stop ovulating forever. (my grandpa's aunt used it. It worked!).

France was known for its low birthrate in that time period.

There were women that would ingest homemade potions or try fall on their stomachs so that they would abort their child.

Thank You Alex. I think abortion was what The Cure' D'Ars was speaking of. He does not make any reference to men/husbands but to women. I think that answers my question.

I've read quite a few instances of women during the later half of the 1800's, for some reason or other, killing their babies after giving birth.
