Purchasing Home in Western NY

  • Hey all,

I am looking into purchasing a property in Upstate/Western NY South of Buffalo. I was wondering if anyone could suggest a buying agent in the area. I know there is an SSPX and SSPV in the area, so perhaps someone has contact with a good agent; and if I could support a Catholic agent with the commission, even better.
    Pray for me

If you have not already visited Our Lady of Victory Shrine (https://www.olvbasilica.org/ ) in Lackawanna, as you know, the suburb to the immediate south of Buffalo, I hope you can.  It  is absolutely magnificent and it is just 1.2 miles from -- if you are inclined -- the SSPX chapel, Our Lady of the Rosary Church.

I don't know if they still go there, but for many years that SSPX chapel was the parish chapel of the Beck Family (17 children), well known, especially by some older trads, for their  music and other contributions to Catholic tradition.)

  • Be sure you like has-been rust belt cities, lots of rain, snow, sleet, and can drive on black ice. Oh, and don’t forget the below zero temperatures. If you need lots of “cultural” amenities, this probably isn’t the place for you. But there are certainly worse places to live.
If you’re moving from anywhere other than California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Chicago, Detroit, or Hawaii, be prepared for price shock. New York is NOT cheap, even in the upstate areas. Understand that NYC and its surrounding suburbs run the entire state.
I’ve lived all over NY, the city, Long Island, Central NY, Jefferson, Lewis, St. Lawrence counties, Utica, Herkimer, Finger Lakes. In general, you either like it or hate it!
As for where to attend Mass, things have changed since the 1980’s so I’m not up on your area.
