Does anyone know of or have the quote or source from St. Hilary of Poitiers (the first Doctor of the Church) where he says (to paraphrase) that we can know of the existence of God simply by, or just by, the material world around us - ?. That every human being knows there is a Creator, or Supreme Being, just because of the world they live in - that it had to come from somewhere. There are, therefore, no excuses for not believing in God. I very much need this quote if it is possible to find. Thanks all!

I can't help you with the St Hillary quote but I think St Thomas is a little more nuanced in his treatment of the subject. The Tour of the Summa explains that the existence of God is self evident but only in itself and not to the human mind.

I guess that's why he discussed the 5 ways.
