The Itailan foreign ministry has said that it cannot confirm a report that Father Paolo Dall’Oglio is now a prisoner of the Islamic State—the latest in a long series of rumors about the status of the Italian missionary, who disappeared in July 2013.
The latest report alleges that Father Dall’Oglio was recently transferred to a prison run by the Islamic State near Aleppo, Syria. But foreign minister Paolo Gentiloni cautioned that there is no hard evidence to support that news.
Father Dell'Oglio was apparently captured near Raqqa, Syria, last July 29. To date, no clear information has emerged about his captors, his whereabouts, or his condition.
