Title: Priests who left the SSPX (c. 2012)
Post by: SeanJohnson on June 24, 2023, 11:43:16 AM
The defunct Ignis Ardens forum had a very interesting December/2012 thread by member "NeelyAnn," which posted letters of varoius priests leaving the SSPX, for a variety of reasons (some of them going bacck to the early 1990's), which can still be read here:

https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/ignis_ardens/why-do-priests-leave-the-sspx-t11560.html

Later in the thread, she posted an attempt at a comprehensive list (again, current only as of 2012) of all priests who had left the SSPX for whatever reason, in alphabetical order, which I copy/paste here (Note that this list does not include most of the priests who left or were expelled for Resistance to the 2012 sellout, nor does it include some of the more modern defections to the various dioceses, like Fr. This list is not entirely accurate nor up-to-date. Example would be the claim that Guerard des Lauriers died reconciled. Also Fr. Lionel Hery is still listed as an SSPX priest by the French District.

As I stated above, the list is from 2012.

Fr. Cekada responded to the thread with the following information:

"Neely Ann,

You've done everyone a great service by posting material here that is of considerable historical interest, but not easily available in one place.

With two exceptions, the letters confirm a suspicion I've held for years: that most priests who leave SSPX go "to the left" — that is, rather than becoming sedes, they end up in the Conciliar Church.

The list of former SSPX priests was also of great interest, but far from complete.

Somewhere in my files, I still have a list from the '80s that SSPX was compelled to give us during the lawsuits. If memory serves, about 30 of those names did not appear on the Loughlan list; they were priests from the earliest days of SSPX who were not well-known in English-speaking countries."

Fr Mroczka joined the SSPV very soon after being ordained by Archbishop Lefebvre. He is the resident priest at St. Anne's in White Bear Lake, MN.

Not to nitpick, but it's spelled "Sretenovic".  Only one T.

I sent Fr Sretenovic a Mass intention just the other day for the second anniversary of my father's passing on 22 July.  Thank you, Father.

Missing from the list is Fr Floriano Abrahamowicz of Trieste, Veneto, in Northern Italy. He was "freelancing" when we were there in 2011. He also ministers in Bolzano, in South Tyrol and Rossana in Calabria.  He has since joined CMRI.

I suspect they confused Fr Lionel Hery with his brother, Fr Christophe Hery, who followed Fr Laguerie into the IBP.

The name Rev. Bolduc has a ring to it, it's like Bold Duck, and he's gone to his own pond, Gilford, New Hampshire. Pastoralitum ridicularumque vel nobis ... endeavor to persevere, nitimini perseverare.

Fr. Terence Finnegan is independent, but not a sede vacantist, and he is the only priest I have heard give a 1½ hour sermon that is riveting!

If anyone has contact information for Fr. Thai Anton Trinh, I would be most appreciative if you share it with me

What about Fr. Joseph Pfeiffer, Fr. David Hewko, Fr. Richard Voight, (SSPX helper), Fr. Brendan Dardis (SSPS helper, actually Benedictine), Fr. François Chazal, Fr. Gerardo Zendejas, Bp. Richard Williamson, Fr. Ringrose (SSPX helper), Fr. Helmuts Libietus

Some are well known on CI and active.  Others have kind of fallen off the radar.
Fr. now +Bp. Zendejas- Connecticut
+Bp. Williamson- Broadstairs, Kent, England
Fr. Joseph Pfeiffer- had himself consecrated a bishop by a Thuc line Bp. Webster, by the videoed ceremony, is positively doubtful, but he’s still a valid priest.  In Boston, KY, but has gone off the rails, so to speak. Still has his “amateur exorcist” pal running (ruining) the establishment, has a “seminary.”
Fr. David Hewko- Hubbardston, MA, independent chapel in a family home, travels to a few other similar venues.
Fr. Chazal- In Philippines, I think on Leyte. Has a “micro-seminary.”  His bamboo chapel was blown to bits in a typhoon, but he’s rebuilding in the same place, only with an frame of iron!  It’s online on Odessey?
Fr. Ringrose- still in St. Athanasius, Vienna, VA
I have lost track of Frs. Dardis, Voigt, and Libietus.  The first two were not in the best of health, and Fr. Libietus May have left the SSPX prior to 2012.  Someone told me he is “a hermit priest” somewhere in Ohio?  Fr. Dardis was in Missouri in 2014, and I last heard of Fr. Voigt being near Syracuse, NY, maybe in 2014.

I'm not clear as to whether Father Terry Marks (whom I knew personally) was ever formally a member of the SSPX, or whether he was more of an "SSPX helper" along the lines of Fr Ronald Ringrose (at that time) or Fr Leo Carley.  Does anybody know?  He and I never discussed it.  I do know that I showed up at Mass one time with a massive high-gain TV antenna in my car (it's a hobby of mine) that I'd picked up at a warehouse earlier in the day, and he found that intriguing.   I liked him very much.

Requiescat in pace.

Is Fr. Carl Sulzen still with the SSPX or did he join The Resistance or go Sedevacantist? There's something unique about him that I can't quite put my finger on. Is he related by any chance to Stephen Heiner of True Restoration?

To my knowledge he is based out of Ridgefield and is the pastor of The St. Christopher Mission in Manhattan and St. Michael the Archangel in Farmingville.

Fr. Reid Hennick announced today that he has left the SSPX. His departure letter is attached, and transcribed below. In the letter he states that since his formation in the seminary he has become a sedevacantist and can no longer represent the Society's interests. The letter is very amicable and not polemical in the slightest.

Quote
February 12, 2025 Feast of the Seven Holy Founders

Dear Brother Priests, Religious, and Faithful of the Society of St. Pius X:

I write to share my decision to step away from ministry in the SSPX. Over the past few years, my view of the crisis in the Church has changed significantly. Despite sincere efforts to find a way forward with the Society, my recent cordial audience with the Superior General gave me the clarity to know that I can no longer presume to represent its interests.

I realize that this news may come as a surprise. Not wanting to disturb anyone’s peace, I chose the path of discretion rather than sow confusion or appear to disrupt the Society’s mission of saving souls. My intention has been to address this sensitive matter in a way that respects both the faithful and the integrity of the Society.

Now I find myself in the challenging position of conveying my decision to leave while still showing due respect to the SSPX. Inevitably, such a decision points to serious disagreements. Nevertheless, I do not wish to deny or diminish the real good that the Society accomplishes. Its provision of the sacraments and valuable Catholic formation to so many, along with all that it has done for me, are things for which I am deeply grateful.

My departure stems from theological conviction and the demands of conscience that follow. Specifically, I have come to the conclusion that the Holy See has been vacant since the Second Vatican Council—a conclusion with profound implications for the apostolate. While this statement requires elaboration, the limited scope of this letter does not permit it. Suffice it to say that when I entered the seminary, I was confident that certain doctrinal questions had been resolved. Over time, however, my confidence in those resolutions eroded. I can only hope that those of you who know me best will understand the gravity of the deliberation behind my conclusion—even if you disagree wholeheartedly.

As indicated above, I have made every effort to accommodate myself to the practical mission of the SSPX, hoping it possible to continue serving as a Society priest while holding to and acting on my convictions. But it has become clear to me that such an arrangement is, under the present circuмstances, unsustainable in the long run.

If this announcement brings confusion or discomfort, please be assured that my foremost concern is to avoid undermining your spiritual peace. I share this news only to provide some context to a decision that I could no longer realistically postpone. Regardless, I implore you to remain steadfast in the practice of the one true faith, continuing to cooperate with God’s grace, as I strive to do and trust that you do as well.

Although I must leave the Society, my commitment as a Catholic priest to the salvation of souls remains unwavering. To this end, I humbly request your prayers as I discern how best to serve Holy Mother Church in keeping with my vocation. The friendships and pastoral encounters that I have enjoyed in the SSPX remain precious to me, and I have no intention of distancing myself from anyone who wishes to keep in contact. May Our Lord grant us the grace to remain united in charity, even when our paths diverge.

In the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary,

Fr. Reid Hennick

P.S. I am not opposed to this letter being shared for information purposes, but I do ask that the amicable nature of my departure be respected. As the theological matter referenced here is already much misunderstood, in your charity, please ensure that the letter not become a pretext for stirring up existing hostilities among traditionalist clergy and faithful.

It's not about feelings, but the good priest went above and beyond to be charitable.

well-written letter
thanks for sharing
I wonder if Avrillé would take him in? I heard they're not opposed to sedevacantist or sededoubtist seminarians.

Fr. Cekada has a point… why do so many priests who leave the Society apostasize and join the “Latin Mass groups”? It’s rather concerning…

Sorry that wasn’t the most clear. I meant like, Fr. Cekada rightly pointed out that a lot of SSPX priests left to join the conciliar church with the FSSP or some other Ecclesia Dei or Rome approved Latin amass group. It’s just confusing why so many left to join the Vatican II sect even in the 90s when the SSPX still had good Catholic Theology.

IMO, it's because they ventured off into areas they had no need to venture off into. They must have dwelt on matters they should have avoided, because doing so only served to get themselves sucked in, areas like "obedience to the pope." They got themselves to deny the difference between true obedience and false obedience, and all the other traditional theology that they learned to keep them out of the conciliar church in the process.

This is what I found on him from a quick Google search:

https://fssp.org.uk/your-clergy/

Fr John Emerson was ordained to the priesthood in June 1981 and incardinated into the FSSP in November 1988. He is based in Edinburgh, Scotland and was in charge of our Scottish apostolate from 2000 to 2022.

Does anyone know what happened to Fr Eric Simonot?  He was French and served in the GB district around 1990. Then he was quite 'hard line' but I heard he had become some NO military chaplain.

Father Paul Aulagnier, former SSPX priest, who founded FIDELITER magazine.

Unofficial.
Livre Bleu *, 1984 (Blue Book of Fr. Barrielle)

This book has been realised in filial hommage and respectful gratitude towards the Rev. Father L. M. Barrielle (1898-1983) who transmitted the torch of the Spiritual Exercises to the Fraternity of St. Pius X.

  PREFACE
by His Excellency Mgr. Marcel Lefebvre
International Seminary of St. Pius X
ECONE (Switzerland)

Écone, 25 February, 1984
St. Matthias, apostle

Blessed are the retreatants of the Exercises of St. Ignatius who may, thanks to this "Book of Prayers and of Exercises" rediscover the souvenirs of the Retreat, and continue to live by them! and thereby perpetuate the marvelous graces received in the course of those blessed days.

This little "Blue Book", so dear to our venerable Père Barrielle, true servant of God, isn't it the voice of the Archangel Raphael, of our guardian angel, throughout our earthly pilgrimage, unceasingly reminding that : "in all things, we must consider the end" and take the appropriate means to reach it.

This is the secret of Christian prudence, of the true wisdom which is opposed to the  prudence of the flesh and of the wise of this world.

This small treasure can therefore be profitable for all souls of good will and will help keep the royal traditional roads towards sanctification according to the most pure spirit of the Church.

O Our Lady, patroness of the Exercises, grant that by the holy use of the "Blue Book", I may one day share your happiness in Eternity.

    + Marcel Lefebvre

* Published by FIDELITER magazine, which was started in January 1978 by Fr. Paul Aulagnier (R.I.P. + 2021 A.D.)
He left the FSSPX in 2003.

Mostly Google Translation: Excerpt

...On Thursday, 6 May 2021, Father Paul Aulagnier, gave his combative soul to God in the 50th year of his priesthood.

Born on 25 May 1943 and ordained a priest by Archbishop Lefebvre on 17 October 1971, he was (with Bishop Tissier de Mallerais) of the first seminarians to place himself under the direction of our founder in Fribourg. He performed important functions in the Fraternité Saint Pius X.

A professor and vice-rector at the seminary of Ecône, he was a superior of the District of France for eighteen years, from 1975 to 1994, and established in our country many priories, schools and works (such as the magazine and the Fideliter editions) which today constitute the essential network of our apostolate. He showed himself in his office an enthusiastic leader, paternal, concerned with vocations...

*******
Abbé Paul Aulagnier RIP.  He was a born leader. I knew him quite well. A prince really. Anyone who knew him will agree that he was a tireless priest, but also enjoyed a hearty laugh. Praying Compline at Suresnes was very special. One morning he wrote 32 letters, by hand!  He brought us to Pontmain, France, where Our Lady appeared on 17 Jan. 1871, at 6:00 p.m., but only to children, and 3 hours later Our Lady blocked the army of the Germans. The General told his soldiers:" We cannot continue...the Madonna is blocking the way!"
I love Our Lady.

He made a trip to Winona in 1989  and wanted to visit with me. He had a wonderful character. We will miss him.

Obviously they didn't "get it". They didn't understand the Traditional Movement, Abp. Lefebvre, or the mission of the SSPX. They were apparently just there for the smells & bells.
Don't think for a minute than when good doctrine is given, everyone absorbs it.

+Williamson was crystal clear on the Jews and Freemasons during his entire 20 year rectorship of the American SSPX seminary. AND YET -- plenty of seminarians rolled their eyes when. +W spoke about the JQ, the Freemasonic infiltration of the Church, etc. Basically any conspiracy. I was blown away whenever I saw cases of this. I was like "Come on, aren't we all Trads? I thought every Trad knew about that!" But apparently NOT.

Going to an SSPX chapel from birth is NOT a guarantee of orthodoxy. It all depends on how you were raised, how you were taught by other parents/teachers/etc. and your personal attitude towards the World (along with Free Will).

How old were you when your naïveté was destroyed? I specifically remember instances of being blown away. For example, a couple seminarians talking about friends back home -- TRADS -- who were guilty of sins like fornication. I was incredulous. I mean, how do you wake up and find yourself committing that sin? Isn't that a pretty egregious thing, a red line of sorts? Don't alarm bells go off that you've completely lost the plot? And yet -- apparently not.

I really liked Fr. Simonot…hard line but practical.  I was surprised when I heard he left the SSPX.  I always wondered why.
