  • Dear Forum,

I have started to pray the rosary while walking my dog and driving to and from work. Doing this, I now find that I can do 15 decades a day while not wasting my driving or walking time. Does anyone else do this?

    Jesus and Mary,
    David

  • You're in good company !
Except when he was offering Mass, Padre Pio prayed the rosary constantly, regardless of what else he was doing.
I forget how many rosaries he prayed each day.

  •  One can pray the rosary while exercising but one can't exercise while praying the rosary; one can pray the rosary while smoking but one can't smoke while praying the rosary, etc.,etc.,etc.

  • A few pointers I would offer:

    1. You are doing the right thing; saying more Rosaries during such idle time is clearly a prudent and profitable move.

    2. There are different kinds of idle time; some take more mental attention than others. Going for a walk (with or without a dog on a leash in front of you) has got to be about the most distraction-free activity there is. In fact, for some individuals, being able to do something with your hands or feet actually HELPS concentration. Some people have to doodle while they're on the phone, etc. And that's to say nothing about the benefits of physically getting out of the house (where all the worldly activity and stress lives).

    3. It's more important to say the Rosary (at least 5 decades a day) while driving, than to not bother because "I can't do it kneeling before a crucifix". Just do your best. A saying comes to mind: "The perfect is the enemy of the good."

    4. If you're spending undivided hours in front of the TV, however (doing *nothing* but watching a show intently) then that should be a reality check for you. But as good as it sounds, this charge doesn't fit everyone. Some people truly are extremely busy and they wouldn't have time for the Rosary if it weren't for their daily commute to work.

  • Yes, I do the same thing.  I walk a path at our Rec Center.  And 2 rosaries is 35 - 40 min. I see others with ear phones and I find myself saying oh, I need to get my 2 rosaries in, and over see the exercise.  Then I have a rosary with my husband before he goes to work, but the days he is off, we say rosary in the morning, it is a much better start of the day.

Once in awhile I may have some say something nice as they pass by me on the walking path.  I do get negative.  One told me I worshiped the devil, another just stood in the path not moving  and after 3 rounds of that, I report to staff.  I think after 3 years I would guess and say I had 70%  nice to me.

I could barely get a decade rosary said in 1990, by 1992 a rosary a day.  And then it just didn't seem like it was enough, like I just got started.  So, by 2006 I was saying 3 rosaries (15 decades).  I felt my day was complete, if I heard or saw woes of the world, I was satisfied that I did my part between My Lady and I.

We do say rosary while driving.  I find it harder to concentrate on both, but I find it better than radio and such.

  • My wife and I have prayed three Rosaries everyday since our marriage. Unfortunately, there are weeks like last week when I work 70+ hours and I have no choice but to pray while walking to work. It is a little more difficult to meditate on the mysteries, but it is a good chance to offer it up.
We conclude logically that religion can give an efficacious and truly realistic answer to the great modern problems only if it is a religion that is profoundly lived, not simply a superficial and cheap religion made up of some vocal prayers and some ceremonies...

while driving as long as you make sure  the rosary is on your person, then you receive the benefits, I forget where I read that

You can read that in any Raccolta.  Carrying the rosary on your person gains you many indulgences that's why religious orders had a rosary hanging from their belt.

Some examples of when you gain indulgences are:
When you are teaching someone about the faith
When you accompany the Blessed Sacrament to the sick or are with them when they receive.
When doing any pious work, making rosaries, helping at church etc.
When you take care of the sick
When making an examination of conscience

    etc

Your rosary is very special to you and you alone that is why it may not to be sold or lent without loosing the indulgences.

The Raccolta also states it is absolutely forbidden to give to a dying person so they may gain the apostolic indulgence in articulo mortis if the crucifix has been so indulgenced

  • Padre Pio used to ask people when they came to the monastery, "How many decades did it take for you to get here?" He meant "How many decades of the rosary did you pray to get from where you started to when you arrived at the monastery?"
