Prayer to St. Joseph Question

  • For many years now, every day my family has been praying this English translation of the prayer to St. Joseph and I always thought the "thrice holy Spouse" was the Most Holy Trinity, but someone the other day told me it was the Blessed Mother. I told the person that I had never heard of the Blessed Mother being called thrice holy and I asked him what this thrice holy is in the Blessed Mother? They could not tell me.

What do others have to say?

    Quote
"To thee, O Blessed Joseph, do we have recourse in our tribulation, and having implored the help of thy thrice-holy Spouse, we confidently invoke thy patronage also. By that charity wherewith thou wast united to the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God, and by that fatherly affection with which thou didst embrace the Child Jesus, we beseech thee and we humbly pray, that thou wouldst look graciously upon the inheritance which Jesus Christ hath purchased by His Blood, and assist us in our needs by thy power and strength......

  • Hi Last Trad,
Great question...one I didn't know the answer to, until I just looked it up, but it's always been in the back of my mind as well.
    .
Yes, the prayer is referring to Our Lady and not the Holy Trinity.  Apparently Her title, "Mother Most Admirable" is not the exact translation.  In latin, the title is "Mater ter admirabilis", which means "Mother, thrice blessed".  In the 1500s, in Ingolstadt, Germany, there was a priest, Fr Rem, who asked Our Lady what Her favorite title was, and She responded with this one.  There's a famous painting in that Church of this title.
    .
The reasons for being thrice blessed are multiple:  1) She is the Mother of God, the Mother of Christ and Mother of all humanity.  2) She is admirable in faith, hope and charity, 3) She was a virgin before, during and after Our Lord's birth, 4) Child of the Father, Mother of the Son, Spouse of the Holy Ghost.

  • 4) Child of the Father, Mother of the Son, Spouse of the Holy Ghost.
Daughter of the God the Father, Mother of the God the Son, Spouse of God the Holy Ghost.

I was taught it meant this.

That's they way I've always taken it, with the Thrice-Holy referring to Our Lady's relationship to each Person of the Holy Trinity.

So the Three is in fact a reference to the Holy Trinity, but via St. Joseph's spouse, Our Lady.

  • I've only seen that in the English version of the prayer. At least not in Latin or Spanish, where I say the equivalent of "Most Holy Spouse".

You are right, I looked it up in Latin and it does not say "thrice holy Spouse" , it says what translates correctly to "Most Holy Spouse" (Sponsae tuae sanctissimae), so the correct translation should be "Most Holy Spouse".
