Manga has the same effect on people. Just a series of emotions and reactions page after page.
No, Manga (graphic novels) are not much different than reading a book. Books and manga have been around for decades (or centuries, in the case of books). The phenomenon he talks about has only been around for less than 10 years. ERGO, it's not comics/graphic novels (American, Japanese, or otherwise) he's talking about.
People don't get emotionally stunted from reading books, however emotional the content. Reading takes MINUTES or HOURS not SECONDS and you get a chance to think, react, take action, meditate, switch gears, etc.
Reading inherently allows you to, and even makes you, think.A graphic novel (which is what a manga is) is NOT a rollercoaster of emotions in 30 second clips.
So don't be ridiculous.
