Post Confirmation Catechism???

  • I have two boys who were confirmed last spring by +Tissier.  Up until this point the catechism lessons have been pretty much laid out, first the Baltimore Catechism for first Holy Communion, then the Baltimore books I and II, as well as the "Catechism for Confirmation" book.

Now my apron strings have been cut and I'm trying to figure out a good source or Catechism Lesson plan for teen aged boys (12 and 13).  I'm looking to also include church history.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks

  • No suggestions yet??

Are you looking for another catechism or other sorts of religion instruction?

    How about Bible History?
There's a middle school level book by Schuster that pairs well with A Practical Commentary on Holy Scripture for additional teacher information.

Our Lady of Victory has a nice little book about the Mass that they use for 5th grade. A higher level book on the same topic might be The Latin Mass Explained. Again, you can use the one as a student book and the other as a teacher resource or just read the latter together.

Fr. Laux's books I believe are geared toward high school, but they're worth checking out as your boys might be ready for that. One of the books is on Church history, but I don't have that one to see what all it includes.

NOTE: These are just books I own, not ones that I've used to teach from as my children are not that old yet. Most of them are specifically designed for course instruction, though.

  • Why not introduce them to some of the Catholic spiritual classics, like "The Story of a Soul" by St Therese. "The Glories of Mary" or "The victories of the Martyrs" by St Alphonsus Ligouri.

  • So many parents in trad circles just seem to stop religious instruction after Confirmation, as if that were all there was to learn, and then we end up with half-catechized Catholics.  12 years of religious instruction is just getting started, and the most important thing for them to learn is that they will never be done learning about the Faith.  Even in adulthood, they must continue to read and learn on their own.

Our Lady of Victory has reprinted the old "Living my Religion" series which is based off the Baltimore, but it goes more in depth and, "repetitio est mater studiorum."

For high school, the "Our Quest for Happiness" series is excellent.

I have books 2-4 of this series. I use book 2 in first grade as First Communion prep. It worked great for me as a primary source supplemented with related stories, coloring pages, etc. I've recently started it again with my next set of students.

I did book 4 with my third graders and didn't like it as much. None of us looked forward to religion lessons with this text and so I won't be using it again unless I can find a way to give it some variety ...or something.

I think the series goes through about 8th grade, so I might try out some others given my mixed results with the earlier ones.
