The Catholic bishops of Poland will not alter the Church's consistent teaching that Catholics who are divorced and remarried cannot receive the Eucharist, the president of the country's episcopal conference has said.

Archbishop Stanislaw Gadecki told reporters that the problems created by an illicit marriage "cannot be solved in a confessional in two minutes, or even in a couple of years." The archbishop said that while the Church should reach out to divorced and remarried Catholics, offering them spiritual support, it should be done with the understanding that "if a marriage has been validly concluded there is no ground for administering Communion to remarried divorcees."

And will they remain steadfast when Bergoglio sends out another group of "Missionaries of Mercy" who have direct authority and jurisdiction from Rome to handle cases of Annulments?

Yes, this is what I was going to say.

Where was all this moral courage when it comes to WYD? Or religious liberty? Or ecuмenism? Or the Mass?

It's true that Poland is not as far gone as Western Europe and North America (for now), but it's far from a bastion of traditional Catholicism. Remember, these are the same bishops who put the kibosh on attempt by the Polish parlaiment a few years back to proclaim Christ as the (honorary) king of Poland.

Backing from the church in this strongly Catholic country would be crucial for building support for the proposal, but on Wednesday several bishops criticized it, and said parliament should stay out of religious affairs.

"Let parliament deal with passing better laws that we need," Gdansk Archbishop Tadeusz Goclowski said.

"This kind of action, although it may stem from good will, sounds a bit like propaganda," said bishop Tadeusz Pieronk.
