Dan Cathy could have saved his company, Chick-fil-A, a lot of trouble. All he had to do was keep his views about family to himself.

Instead, he answered a question honestly. In a recent media interview, the company’s president and chief operating officer said what he believes and why he believes it. But his politically incorrect views are intolerable, judging from the anger of many on the left, including several big-city officials who are dead-set against his views.

In the interview, Mr. Cathy said he is “very much supportive of the family, the biblical definition of the family unit.” Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel took exception: “What the COO has said as it relates to gαy marriage and gαy couples is not what I believe. But more importantly, it’s not what the people of the city of Chicago believe.”

Spirited debates about controversial topics are an American tradition, but it didn’t stop there. The politicians began threatening to block Chick-fil-A’s plans to expand in their cities.

In a letter to Chick-fil-A, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino wrote: “I was angry to learn, on the heels of your prejudiced statements, about your search for a site to locate in Boston. There is no place for discrimination on Boston's Freedom Trail, and no place for your company alongside it.”

Proco Joe Moreno, a Chicago alderman, told Chick-fil-A to forget about its plans to build a second store in the Windy City: “I’m not gonna sit on the sidelines and allow them to come in when I know in my heart that they believe in discriminating against gαy people.”

In Philadelphia, meanwhile, city Councilman James F. Kenney told Mr. Cathy to “take a hike and take your intolerance with you.” He also said he plans to introduce a resolution condemning Chick-fil-A at the next council meeting.

At this point, we’ve moved well beyond debate. It’s a free-speech issue now.

These officials did not merely express an opposite point of view. They threatened to use their political power to punish a man — and those who work for him — for saying something with which they disagree. The message this sent is crystal-clear and chilling: Conform to the “accepted” view, or else.

Mr. Emanuel and company spoke in breathless tones about how offensive Mr. Cathy’s beliefs are. Yet what could be more offensive than what they’re trying to do? What could be more, yes, discriminatory than using the power of the state to punish private viewpoints under the guise of standing up against discrimination?

“You can’t have a business in the city of Boston that discriminates against a population,” Mr. Menino said. But the company does no such thing. Chick-fil-A hires employees and serves customers without regard to sɛҳuąƖ orientation. The head of the company simply expressed his privately held view on the issue of family.

It’s not just talk. The Cathy family has been a model of corporate responsibility, helping tackle social problems and strengthen civil society. For years, they’ve taken concrete steps to strengthen families through the programs of its WinShape Foundation. Founded in 1984 by S. Truett Cathy, WinShape supports college scholarships, foster care and international ministries. It works hard to strengthen marriage, offering counseling and help for couples in crisis, saving marriages that were on the brink of divorce.

WinShape also works with other like-minded groups that seek to strengthen marriage in America. “It’s the kind of work that will take decades — even generations,” writes Jennifer Marshall, director of the DeVos Center for Religion and Civil Society at the Heritage Foundation. “And it’s not the stuff of headlines, which is why many Americans probably have no idea this critical effort is under way.”

What does make the headlines? False and outrageous charges of discrimination from opportunistic politicians with little respect for free-speech rights.

“We know that it might not be popular with everyone, but thank the Lord we live in a country where we can share our values and operate on biblical principles,” Mr. Cathy added in the interview that led to the controversy.

  • It is not at all clear that they actually discriminate.  Do they refuse to hire ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖs?  Do they ask people about their sɛҳuąƖ attractions on applications?  Do they refuse to promote qualified ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖs who are employed?  All that really happened is that the owner of the company expressed his religious opinions.  It seems that it is really faith that is not welcome in Boston.
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

  • Well said Sigismund; there's only one acceptable answer in the world of politicians and media. I wonder why? $

  • Back in the 90's when Monaghan was still running Domino's he came out against abortion. Planned Parenthood, or a similar organization, mounted a boycott, and Domino's sales soared as a result. I don't think this will hurt Chick's business.

I know that if there were a Chik-fil-A near me I would eat out there exclusively, not only for the good food (can you say waffle fries mmm) but to support them in their commitment to remain a Christian business.

  • I worked there for 1.5 years as a teenager, it was a great job and I ate a ton of free chicken. My mom still tries to copy their fried chicken recipe, I'll tell you a little secret:

They marinate all their chicken for 24 hours in pickle juice and spices before they sell it.

Aren't the Cathy's Baptists? And are not Baptists outside of the Church and therefore not Christians?

That being said I would consider doing business with them instead of their sodomite supporting competition.

  • Tomorrow is Chick-Fil-A Appreication Day.

This show our appreciation for this business and stands up to the
political correctness, and anti-Christian agenda that is pushed by
the propraganda of the mass media.

They profess faith in Jesus Christ, which is more than can be said of any Jєωιѕн or atheist business, which seem to be in the majority. They are not Catholic, no, but if they profess belief in the Christ, I see nothing wrong with calling them Christians. Christians in error, but Christians nonetheless.

  • Did you have your chicken today?!  We did.  Our Chick-fil-a was surrounded with people and the drive thru was in the major street.  At 11am it was packed and no media.  The patrons took pictures and sent their pictures to the major news stations.  Imagine having to do that!  The people had great attitudes and were in no hurry in the heat of Arizona.  They were all polite!  That's my kind of people.

  • Closest Chik-fil-A to us:
(not close enough to join this crowd, though)

    Quote
Lines wrapped around the store and outside the door, and traffic backed up out of the parking lot and down the street Wednesday afternoon as [city residents] and others showed their support for restaurant franchise Chick-fil-A.

Some folks were in line Wednesday even though they said they detest the restaurant’s staple: chicken.

  • This sorry excuse for a country has become nothing but a politically correct cesspool with sodomites, feminists and diabolical Jєωs running the show.

Imagine, a good company like this that would make money in any area it went into, provide jobs and pay taxes  but is actually threatened not to come anywhere near some of these garbage heaps called cities by the very corrupt and depraved politicians that are in charge of them because of what the owner's personal religious beliefs are.......things like faith, family and traditional marriage between a man and a woman.

And these same pathetic losers in our halls of govt do nothing but squawk about "freedoms" and "land of liberty", their hypocrisy knows no limitations.

Do you really believe you live in a "free country"?

I hear this company even closes on Sundays because it's the Sabbath.

Can you imagine how much revenue this company foregoes to stick to it's principles and God's Law? From what I know of, this chicken food chain is big down south and you know how much those southern folks like their chicken, especially after church on Sundays.

This is a good and righteous man and corporation, I don't care if they're "Baptists" or not, most "catholics" these days could learn a thing or two from these heretics.

But the mayors and politico's from the major cities would rather lambaste them publicly and ban them from entering their localities because of offending a few sɛҳuąƖ deviants and perverts. This country is so screwed, it deserves something even worse than 911 someday and I can guarantee it will get it.

If not, God will owe Sodom and Gomorrah and apology someday.

  • I went to Chick-Fil-A for lunch today. I was surprised to see the door so long. It was a bit weird, as I figured I might be the only Catholic there, but I still wanted to show support against the radical same-sex movement. Here's an okay pic. A friend from work in the same department said he'd be going at his lunch too. The line actually got longer by the time I left. It took me 40 minutes to order. Mind you, this is technically a suburb of LA, in California; it was a good thing to see.

This pic is after me being in line about 10 minutes. There were a lot of people showing up by that time, and it grew significantly afterwards.

Now... how do we get these people to who up at abortion rallies?  :detective:

  • That is good to see. Like they said, they make more money than other businesses in the area despite being closed on Sunday- you can bet they will get skads more business now. Stupid liberals shot themselves in the foot with this one!

  • Today is Chik-Fil-A Appreciation Day.

The lines were very long, and there were two roll of cars going up
to the order take out. There were not a seat to be had inside. I had
to park my car two blocks away and walked up and wait in line
    for a take out order.
The Taco Bell, and McDonalds that share the same block were not
    doing any business at all.
The area I live in is known as the Bible Belt, and 90% Southern
Baptist, and that have very big mega churches in this area.
I am just glad that someone is standing up to the stupid
    political correctness of this era.
