My Happy Abortion: One Woman's Guilt-Free Story by Jessica DelBalzo

June 10, 2011 - 8:12am

The title of this article was changed at 9:40 am, June 10th, 2011 to reflect the fact that while the author was raised Catholic, she no longer self-identifies as such.

Though I was raised in a Catholic family and apparently encouraged to participate in a “Right to Life” poster contest as a child, I can't remember a time in my life when I wasn't pro-choice.  I remember thinking and even saying aloud that I would abort if I got pregnant as a teenager.  Then, as a young twenty-something, I became eager to have children – and I welcomed two very wanted, well-loved babies into the world.  Once things began to deteriorate between their father and I, I knew without a doubt that any future pregnancy we faced would be terminated

In October of last year, I made good on that promise to myself.

In September, I began experiencing pregnancy symptoms.  My period was late.  I was bloated; my small frame has always started to look pregnant within weeks of conceiving, and this time was no different.  Still, all the upheaval in my personal life made me hesitant to confirm the pregnancy.  I put it off until October, when I realized how silly it was to continue being nauseous, tired and fat when I had absolutely no desire to have another child.  Within an hour of testing, I had an appointment at a clinic that had been recommended to me by a friend:  American Women's Services in Woodbridge, NJ.

I didn't have any qualms about the ethics of my decision, but I was nervous just the same.  I have anxiety about medical issues, and knowing that they were going to take my blood and examine my body made me fearful.  I was relieved when the blood draw was just a finger prick for typing purposes, and I felt better when the ultrasound was done.  I was confirmed nine weeks and several days pregnant.

Because I had refused anything more than the local anesthetic used to numb the cervix for dilation, it wasn't long before I was called in for the actual procedure.  The doctor's assistants were kind and reassuring when I commented that it seemed most of the women there were having “twilight sleep.” I wondered momentarily if I had made a big mistake choosing to be awake and alert.

I hadn't.  The doctor came in, amiable and obviously adept at his job.  He talked to me as he performed the abortion, letting me know when it might hurt a bit more and when that pain would subside.  The entire thing was incredibly mild – a twinge here, a tug there, a few pokes and some cramping that lasted a couple of minutes.  I was so relieved to be present in the moment, rather than floating in a murky, drug-induced fog.

It couldn't have been more than five minutes before one of the assistants helped me to sit up so that I could get dressed.  She walked me out into the recovery area, and I unsuccessfully attempted to repress the huge grin that had developed on my face.  I felt euphoric.  I was so relieved to be done with all the medical business, even happier to know that I was no longer pregnant, and pleasantly surprised that I wasn't feeling any physical pain.

I felt momentarily guilty when one of the other patients in recovery asked me if I ever stopped smiling, but I quickly reminded myself that it was senseless guilt.  After all, smiling is a natural reaction to happiness, and I was happy sitting there.  When they released me to go home fifteen minutes later, I was gladder still.

I know how far out of our society's collective comfort zone it is to hear a woman say that she feels happy about her abortion, but I do.  My feelings go far beyond the simple relief that many women describe.  I am actually grateful for the experience itself and for the fact that, by sharing my story with others, I can be an ambassador for reproductive freedom.

That's right, I speak openly about my abortion.  It's the easiest way to reassure women who are contemplating a termination that the neither the procedure itself nor the emotional aftermath will necessarily be dramatic.  It's also the easiest way to personalize the need for reproductive rights among friends and family members.  And, perhaps the most important reason to me as a mother, is that being open about my experience with my children will avail them of the knowledge that abortion is not shameful or uncommon. It isn't something “other” women do.  It is a real, valid choice that women they know and love have made without remorse.

My terminated pregnancy was not a regrettable event requiring any apology from me. The only apology needed must come from those who are working diligently to prevent women like myself from accessing vital services to control their own reproductive destinies.  I regret but one thing:  that by the time my daughter is in the position to need an abortion, factions of fanatical, misogynistic conservatives may have eliminated her right to choose.

People can and do grossly evil things without being "possessed". I see it all the time in my field.

Killing a human being and smiling about it, sounds more like a sociopath or a serial killer than a rational human being, especially since this piece of garbage bore two children already.

Neither is a sign of possession. I agree that she is a piece of trash.

But you can't rule it out either.

My problem with calling evil people and heinous criminals possessed is that it takes the guilt and free choice away from their criminal acts.

Perfect possession does not remove guilt. That means one has  made some deal with the devil and they're totally HAPPY with it. They've made a pact in some way or another and they totally remember it and are satisfied with the decision.

So that doesn't remove guilt at all, and it doesn't take away from "free choice" either.

I find myself asking if this story is even true. Sounds like pure propaganda aimed at young people who have never given birth or experienced parenthood in anyway. I can't think of anyone who would be so non-chalante about having an abortion.

Do you really think she had the abortion?

This woman is pure evil... Only a truly sinister, evil, rotten and depraved human being, transcending the level of sociopath could possibly do such a thing like this and then have no remorse, no guilt, no conscience, nothing.  :barf:

Instead of choosing to be with God, she chose to be with the Devil and it (his evil ways) has entirely consumed her soul. It would take nothing short of a huge miracle to make people like her see the light. I would like to believe that this woman is lying and crying her eyes out for what she has done. Lord, have mercy on her.

I know you probably find it hard to believe (as do I), but in a culture like this that worships death with all of its body and soul, one can't really help but be unsurprised by something like this happening.

I would like to believe that this is propaganda, and the dubiousness of the matter does make it seem that way, but as I said.. Anything is possible given the current culture of the world.

You mean the one daughter you "decide" gets to live when you're guilt-ridden egocentric conscience compels you to refrain from institutionalized infanticide in order to "choose" to have a baby to distract you from the fact that you've destroyed your womanhood and dignity and are awaiting the ravages of age and death despite all your efforts?

There's nothing more misogynistic than tricking women into what I would call "suicidal prostitution:" women giving themselves over to the lusts of the men they hate or belittle, while destroying their bodies and their children through contraceptives and infanticide, and then brainwashed into thinking that it's "good" and a "right." I call that the "Ed Gein" effect: self-murdered women, whose body parts are become the trophies of maniacal psychopaths.

By the way, a mother who raises a daughter who "needs" an abortion is no mother at all. There is an adequate term for that, but this is a family friendly forum, so...

This section interests me the most, because it has been hitting me more and more about how most evil is done out of cowardice.  Look at what a coward this woman is.  Everything for her straight down the line is all geared towards her convenience.  She has gotten to a point of such selfishness that she dismisses her husband, who she has two kids with, with nary a second thought, she then chooses to dismiss her baby without a second thought, and what is she worrying about?  A pinprick at the doctor's office.  She has reached, like so many in our culture, a sort of nirvana of pure ego, where they can destroy others with total remorselessness, and then turn into giant bawling babies if even their smallest desires are thwarted.

The irony is that by taking the easy way out and by trying to avoid all pain, people not only make their lives much more fearful and painful, serving themselves only until they end up alone and with nothing but poisonous, guilt-ridden memories to look back on, but could easily end up suffering the eternal pains of hell.

I can't stop thinking about this.  If you asked the common neo-pagan on the street if he enjoyed the sensation of boiling water poured over his face, chances are he'll say no.  Some of them, like this woman, are afraid of a routine doctor's appointment where blood is drawn.  Yet they will flout God and risk eternal hellfire.  You can say "Well, they don't know there's a hell."  But sometimes that isn't true.  My uncle, who claims to be an atheist, once said "It's my choice" when I mentioned he would go to hell ( at that point, I was less cautious in my choice of words ).  I think that at some point, with lots and lots of people, they realize that there really is a God and that there are consequences for their actions.  That happened with me, and right away I grabbed on to the grace I was given, although it took me a while to really understand what sin was.  I don't think I'm so special that I had this revelation because I'm a rare, exquisite angel.  I think many others also have it, but they reject it, because it would force them to change.

This woman grew up Catholic or "Catholic," she at least knows that abortion is considered wrong even in that sham that calls itself Catholic, as well as being considered wrong amongst all who call themselves Christians.  Yet she defiantly has one anyway, which she must know is against God and risking hell.  And here she is scared of a needle poking her skin.  A needle!

The reality is, humans are weak and selfish and evil by nature, and this behavior just goes to show you how low we can sink without God's grace.  Fear makes us selfish, and selfishness makes us commit evil acts.  Only with God's grace can we overcome fear and make choices that often go against our temporal, personal well-being.  Without that, we are nothing but machines, programmed for self-preservation.  Oh, how merciful God is to have shown this to me!  I really see how wretched I was and still am when out of fear I neglect to do the right thing, which is almost always the hard thing.  This woman has degenerated into a kind of blob dimly following its basic instincts, with dead-eyed, brittle joylessness, and she doesn't even see anything wrong; on the contrary, she feels the need to write an article telling others how guilty she claims she doesn't feel.

I have been thinking about this for some time and I believe this to be true as well. Apparently there have been cases of the most anti-catholic atheïsts who, on their deathbeds, became aware of the impending punishment that awaited them in the afterlife. I believe this to be a 'final grace' given by God to give them one last chance to repent and to bow before His divine mercy. Unfortunately, there are those who even then obstinately reject the mercy shown to them in their pride.

Let us, in any case, pray for the conversion of the woman who wrote the article about her infanticide. It is truly shocking with what shamelessness and ease contemporary people gloat about their sins. Or perhaps she wrote it as a vain attempt to caress her guilty conscience, concealing it behind heartbreaking utterances such as 'happy abortion'.

There is a God Who waits for her conversion, and He carries healing in His wings.

To amend what I said: the workings of this woman are pure evil, and evil has consumed her heart and mind, making her become an evil person. Hopefully that is clarified.

Absolutely horrific.  And just to add to the degree of depravity, she was 3 months along ... if I remember my own pregnancies correctly, the baby has developed to the point of "quickening" in the womb.  There is no way a woman can play games that this is not a child, not a human life she is extinguishing.  Truly evil.

One day, they are going to air happy commercials about getting an abortion with smiling people and happy music. It'll be like those disgusting valtrex genital herpes commercials.

I think they already have. I remember seeing a couple. Mostly what you will hear or see on the TV or radio are ads of that nature for birth control courtesy of the "women's" clinic.

Feelings such as sadness, remorse, and regret when it comes to sin is a gift from God.  It is sad that society encourages this kind of selfish disregard for one's own offspring, but we must remember that our own sense of horror about her actions come from God, not ourselves.  Rather than build up a hatred for this woman as she describes how far away from God she is, we should sincerely pray for her, that she be brought back from darkness.  It's easier to pray for someone who say, is in an accident and winds up on the verge of death in a hospital.  But in reality someone like this lost woman is actually much more in need of prayers.  She is on the far edge of darkness, headed towards an eternity of suffering.

We shouldn't hate the woman, but we should hate what she's saying and what she stands for.  It's satanic, so we should hate it.

There's always a danger in saying "don't hate" that one is losing one's abhorrence for evil under the guise of love for sinners.

Of course!  But I have noticed when it comes to abortion, those who recognize Satan's role in it, and abhor the evil of it, tend to harbor strong feelings of ill-will towards the perpetrators of this evil.  Since we correctly view it as infanticide, there's a tendency to get overly emotional and harbor strong feelings of hatred towards the women seeking abortion and the abortionists.

I've seen it all over the place with my experience of side-walk counseling and it does very little to actually bring these people out of the grasp of Satan they are stuck in.  Hating sinners and thinking of them as less than human is a trick of Satan as well.  If it weren't for God's blessings, each and every one of us would be out fornicating and encouraging abortion as well.
