  • Not talking about typos either. I'm talking about "they don't know the difference between the two words."

I have never been confused about these words, even as a young child. Even as a 6 year old.

QUIET = 2 syllables, pronounced "KWY - ET", meaning "silence"

QUITE = 1 syllable, rhymes with WHITE, TIGHT, LIGHT. Meaning "exceedingly".

I see so many people use one in place of the other. Are people really that stupid today?
I had to go back to the email I sent you earlier today to make sure I wasn't the inspiration for this thread. :laugh1:  It wasn't me! I spelled QUIET correctly several hours after your started this thread. *phew*

  • I finally have had time to read the thread here.  There are some great examples of spelling errors!  So many good laughs!  Thank you everyone!  :laugh2:

Matthew, that story of "You are cutting off my calculation" is hilarious!

Speaking of hilarious...  I just typed hysterical at first and had to correct it!  :laugh1:

I remember as a child making the mistake of calling something funny "historical".  My siblings called me out on it and teasingly said "Yes!  It definitely will be remembered in future books of history!"

I sometimes write "who" instead of whom if I am tired and don't look over my work.

I liked English but I was never great at spelling and keeping all of the "tenses" straight.

I remember my mother used to tell me to look words up in the dictionary if I didn't know how to spell them.

I in turn would ask "How am I supposed to look a word up in the dictionary if I don't know how to spell it?"

But...  I definitely remembered how to spell words if I had to look up several places to find them in the dictionary.  So, maybe she was right in her suggestion?

  • You hit the nail on the head. When people depend on spell check on their phone, etc. you often end up with the wrong word, even though it's a validly spelled word (in other contexts). Just the wrong context, which computers haven't a clue about. It takes the faculty of Reason to understand language.
There is also "grammar check", but I'm not sure if this is available on phones.
