  • English is not my first language, and I know I am not a great writer, but the mixing up of "their" and "they're" is quite annoying. This one seems to be quite prevalent.
Not to mention its and it’s, as if the apostrophe has no function. Even the most literate around here do it repeatedly.

  • Another common misspelled word which is common in these parts is semitic, regularly written as semetic.
    Think semite
    Not semete.

That competes with 's for plurals as my all-time favorite.

  • You can tell when people never read :)
And by read I mean professional, edited BOOKS..

I am a Grammar Nαzι, majored in English at ND, read a good amount, taught HS English, tutored for the SAT/ACT for years, etc.  Even when I am reading for pleasure, I simply cannot avoid noticing errors.  Sadly, most modern books are full of little errors that are inexcusable.  Who got paid to proofread such manuscripts and why did someone pay so much money to print such substandard works?  It is rather pathetic, but that is the place to which we have descended.

  • :laugh2::laugh2: :incense: :laugh2::laugh2:  I can’t give a source for this, but on some YouTube comments, a person kept harping on about the proper ROLLS of bishops!
I pictured bishops rolling on the floor, (charismatic movement?)  Or bread?  Kaiser roll, dinner roll, hero roll, hamburger or hotdog roll?  Jelly roll? 😋

  • And here’s another few from the pre-internet past!  Reference in a newspaper to hundreds of UNINFORMED officers attending the funeral of a fellow policeman.  I think they meant UNIFORMED!
A hand-written poster in an auto service station window announced, “We accept used WAIST oil.”
Homemade flyers seeking a TENET to sub-let a studio apartment for the upcoming university semester.
    I can’t tell how often the words AFFECT/EFFECT, IMPLICITLY/EXPLICITLY, THAN/THEN, THERE/THEIR/THEY’VE, WHO’S/WHOSE, OUR/ARE, and ITS/IT’S are confused!

In public places in NYC, “Restrooms for COSTUMERS only.”

If you’re a foreigner, English is not the easiest language to learn. Mistakes are understandable.  If you’re a native English speaker, of average intelligence, completed your basic education, then something is wrong somewhere!

This is kind of interesting, because I have never seem these mistakes made by fellow students. They are typical of native speakers.

People who learn English as a foreign language are more prone to make grammar mistakes when they are trying to make their native language grammar work in English.

The only other language that I have tried to learn was Spanish, and, although it is very close to Portuguese, I think it is much more difficult to master than English.

English verbs, for instance, are very easy to understand and conjugate, especially when compared to the numerous verb conjugations of Romance languages.

  • I think part of the problem is the use of spell check.  It doesn't catch context.  As long as it's a word that is spelled correctly, the program passes on it.

You hit the nail on the head. When people depend on spell check on their phone, etc. you often end up with the wrong word, even though it's a validly spelled word (in other contexts). Just the wrong context, which computers haven't a clue about. It takes the faculty of Reason to understand language.
