  • What is a patron saint?
Do I choose one, is one chosen for me?
Why do I have a patron saint? (I currently do not have one that I am aware of)
And other stuff relating to this topic.
    Thanks all.

  • From Catholic Encyclopedia:

    Quote
A patron is one who has been assigned by a venerable tradition, or chosen by election, as a special intercessor with God and the proper advocate of a particular locality, and is honored by clergy and people with a special form of religious observance. The term "patron", being wider in its meaning than that of "titular", may be applied to a church, a district, a country, or a corporation. The word "titular" is applied only to the patron of a church or institution. Both the one and the other, according to the legislation now in force, must have the rank of a canonized sain

You can find a lot more about Patron Saints in the Catholic Encyclopedia:
    http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/11562a.htm

If you have saint's name, you already have one patron saint, though I realize many parents these days like to be "cute" and do not give their children a saint's name.  Your confirmation name is another patron saint.  You can also choose any patron saint for yourself to emulate and pray to for intercession.  My patron saint, for example, is St. Thomas More, The King's Good Servant.

  • Your patron saint is Saint Matthew. A great saint, an apostle and an evangelist.

  • Hello.
My name is Matthew. I’m 43, married and father of 5.
I received my conditional baptism September 15, 2018. No idea on when confirmation will occur.
We live in the Pacific Northwest.
For now I’m doing my best to follow my wife’s lead on the faith but am trying to catch up so I can fully and properly apply myself to the traditional role. (I have always supported my wife and children in the faith, despite being allegedly a Protestant)
Remember this. I didn't forget that you had given your Christian name so I searched your early posts.
Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,

  • My middle name is Elizabeth, and once I got old enough I started researching different saints named Elizabeth. I choose Elizabeth of Hungry as my name saint, and Mary Magdalene as my confirmation saint.

You said you were baptized just this year. So, I’m assuming your family wasn’t Catholic, or they were Catholic, but didn’t practice any of the faiths sacraments/traditions (such as baptism). When Catholics name their children they try to name them after saints so they have a sorta best friend growing up. A saint they could look up to, and study help them grow in sainthood.

If you're going to ask questions on the forum, you really should read the answers.  I answered this question on the second post above.

  • I do read the answers. But that does not mean I fully understand them, thus I ask clarifying questions.
My mother and father were not catholic, so I had no idea that my middle name was a saint name, and I do not think it was my mothers intent to give me a saints name.

My wife was the one who was raising our children in the faith, and yes, she did and does follow the sacraments.

Remember that I am new to the faith, I ask a lot of questions that may seem like no brainers to many of you, and therefore would appreciate viewing me through the prism of teaching a child.
