  • I saw this mentioned in another thread, and thought I would start a new thread about it.  I know that membership in the Freemasons, and it's affiliates like the Shriners, is absolutely incompatible with Catholicism and is sinful.  What about other clubs, however?  Something like the Lions, The Rotary Club, the Eagles, Sons of Italy, etc.  As far as I am aware, there is no connection between these sorts of organizations and the Masons, nor is there anything "secret" about them.  Rather, it seems to just be a group of people (usually men) that eat and drink together, and occasionally do a charitable event.

Before joining up, do your detective work!  Most of those you mention are affiliated with Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ.  Many similar organisations for women are also secret societies.  Of course, not all are evil.  My membership in a local sewing club, for example, has nothing to do with Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ and is certainly not a secret society!
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

  • What Frances said.

Some may be no more than a group of guys drinking and doing bingo, and those who join get to help with the upkeep of the building and get certain privileges of use. You just have to read the fine print. Not all clubs are secret societies, either. Some even have Catholic roots, as there are still quite a few ethnic Catholicm clubs out there.

Of course the secret, forbidden societies want to gloss over their true purpose and need to attract lower-level donors from the unwitting.

  • I really don't know anything about the clubs that were mentioned above, however, if its a "secret society" kind of club wouldn't people have to take some sort of secrecy oath?  I presume this might be a red flag.

So if you think you're joining a simple sewing club and the next thing you know you're in a dark room and the Grand Sewing Master is lighting candles and the Needle Wizard blindfolds you while chanting ancient Jibbinese while you are read an oath that whatever happens in the sewing clubs stays exclusively in the sewing club on pain of death...it might be affiliated with  Icterus's chapel.
