  • This is why video games are bad.

This is the logical conclusion to where video games lead. These parents are complete addicts, to be sure, but they were just going with human nature. Anyone, if they didn't have self-discipline, would be capable of doing the same thing. That's what I find scary.

Just like it's scary to see pictures of mangled "driving-while-texting" victims if you happen to do that yourself. You know it could be you next time.

Many video game addicts have little self-discipline to turn the game off. This particular couple had zero. There's not a lot of difference between zero and "2" or "3" -- that's my point.

Just a couple steps down, and you're there.

  • I see the same behavior by people addicted to traditional games like football. There lives become consumed by their favorite teams. I enjoy video games and they have never adversely affected my life. There are far more problems underlying the above couples situation than just video game addiction. I expected more from you mathew. Blaming it on video game addiction is a simplistic fox news diagnosis of the problem. People play video games because they are fun. I enjoy strategy games because they are fun and allow me to sharpen my mind whilst enjoying myself. It is no different than playing chess.

  • Most undisciplined youths these days also happen to be into video games. Video games are exciting, addictive, etc. and so unless you have self-discipline, they will control you just like crack or alcohol.

Some people can use alcohol with moderation too -- good for them. But that doesn't change the fact that alcohol is addictive, and weak men and women will lose control, becoming "used" by the substance rather than the other way around.

It actually takes an enormous amount of self control to regulate one's use of video games -- especially when you're talking about multi-player, which have a social, always-there element to them. 1-player video games aren't very addictive at all by comparison.

And when I say "video games are bad" I'm mostly referring to the online, compete-with-the-real-world variety. Those are the worst. Those are the ones that cause Asians to spend 2 days at an Internet cafe with only a pack or two of Ramen noodles and a few energy drinks to keep them going.

  • Some University carried out experiments a couple years ago that showed that some people bodies release enough dopamine while playing video games to match the amount of dopamine they would release while smoking heroine. They were of course using multi-player games for this experiment. But it still makes you wonder...

  • The way I look at it is that most things are OK in moderation. Having said that, I think it's a given that we could all use a little less time spent on the internet, TV, video games, and other forms of entertainment and more time spent in prayer and meditating on eternal realities. Just my two cents.

  •   A parent should be a mature person and have some special characteristics. It is not about lawfulness of video games, it is about parenthood. Like it or not, babies need so much care. So even when a mother wants to have some pastime or leisure, she should either keep her baby close to her (so as to notice any signs of hunger etc.) or entrust it to another adult.
If both of the parents are video gaming, then they should ask for help from a relative or a babysiter etc.
    ..............
I know that some worldy people object to this and say:"you mean that parents are not human and shouldn't have any fun?", but the only answer I can give them is to make them think if there is any fun in death of a baby.
