Bump.

Happy Feast!

Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine, Mexico, is the most visited Shrine in the Catholic world. When I visited there in 1977, it was a normal day, but I was especially surprised to see thousands of pilgrims, some really poor looking, just walking /SINGING in pilgrimages, and no registration was required by the authorities!!  It seemed like an endless column of souls. The name Guadalupe, is roughly translated as the "savior from the devil." In truth both apparitions are Apocalyptic, for Our Lady is the Woman with the Twelve Stars ...

Grok assembled these miracles at my request:

The miracles of Our Lady of Guadalupe center on the apparition to Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill near Mexico City in December 1531 and the enduring image on his tilma (cloak) made of agave fiber, which is considered miraculous due to its longevity and inexplicable properties.
The first miracle occurred when Juan Diego's uncle, Juan Bernardino, was miraculously healed after the Virgin assured Juan Diego that his uncle would recover, which was confirmed upon his return.
The primary miracle is the appearance of the image itself: when Juan Diego, following the Virgin's instructions, gathered Castilian roses blooming in winter on the frost-covered hill and placed them in his tilma, the image of the Virgin appeared on the fabric upon its opening before Bishop Juan de Zumárraga.

The story of the tilma and roses spread quickly. Though most indigenous people never saw the image in person, word of the miracle ignited a spiritual movement. Within seven years (1531–1538), approximately 8 million indigenous people converted to Catholicism. By 1541—within a decade—estimates reach 9 to 10 million conversions, the largest and fastest in history.

This transformation was unprecedented, especially given the resistance to Spanish missionaries before 1531. The image served as a powerful tool for evangelization, affirming the dignity of native people and presenting Mary as their mother.

The tilma itself is considered a miracle due to its preservation for nearly 500 years despite being made of a fragile cactus fiber that typically disintegrates within 15–20 years.
It has not deteriorated, despite exposure to environmental elements, candle smoke, and countless pilgrims' kisses.
Scientific investigations have revealed that the image shows no brush marks, and the pigments used are of unknown origin, not matching any known plant, mineral, or animal sources, leading some researchers to conclude the paint is not of human origin.
The colors have not faded or cracked, even without varnish.

The image contains remarkable optical phenomena. The Virgin’s eyes contain reflections of people present in the bishop’s office at the time of the tilma’s unveiling, including figures like Juan Diego and the bishop, which were discovered through photographic enlargement.
These reflections are consistent with the laws of physiological optics, including the Purkinje-Samson effect, suggesting the eyes behave like living human eyes.
In 1979, Dr. José Aste Tonsmann used computer analysis to discover that the pupils contain digital-like images of people, including a detailed image of Juan Diego showing the tilma with the Virgin’s image, visible at a magnification of 2,500 times.

Astronomical accuracy is another claimed miracle: the stars on the Virgin’s mantle correspond precisely to the night sky over Mexico City on December 12, 1531, the day of the apparition, as confirmed by astronomers.
The image also maintains a consistent human body temperature of approximately 98.6°F (36.6–37°C), regardless of external conditions.
In 1785, a spill of 50% nitric acid on the tilma created a 10 cm hole, but the fabric and image remained intact, with only a faint stain visible today.
In 1921, a dynamite explosion near the image failed to damage it, though surrounding structures were destroyed.

A more recent reported miracle occurred on April 24, 2007, during a Mass for the defense of unborn life, when an intense, pure white light in the shape of a fetus emerged from the Virgin’s abdomen, visible in photographs and confirmed by engineers to be an internal emission, not a reflection or artifact.
This event led to her being recognized as the patroness of the unborn.
Additionally, a gynecologist reportedly heard a fetal heartbeat of 115–120 beats per minute when placing a stethoscope on the Virgin’s belt, consistent with a fetus in the womb.
These phenomena, combined with the image’s symbolic elements—such as the four-petaled flower over her womb representing life and divinity—have contributed to her veneration as a powerful intercessor.

Thank you for the Grok summary; and all this Apparition occurred in the Octave of the Immaculate Conception (old calendar)! The  supernatural humbles the minds of even the greatest of scientists ( or it should!!) . Paint from unknown source! no brush strokes! No decay! etc...

I stayed a few months at the El Paso rectory, and that chapel has a large painting over the altar of Our Lady of Guadalupe. As you move away from the painting, it seems to stay the same size, intriguing.

Great reference here from Reply #2, OP 2023...plus a good link there to hear the "Music of the Tilma"..

That’s amazing you visited Guadeloupe. Have you been back since 1977? It’s so far from me here in England but would be great to go: what’s it like now as you visited a very long time ago! I have been to Lourdes in France, a few shrines in Ireland and Walsingham UK.
Title: Our Lady of Guadalupe, Crushes the Serpent, the infernal Dragon, 1531 AD.

The topic of the original article is "Jonas, figure of Jesus-Christ" pp283 - 293

The ancient Aztecs that inhabited present day Mexico worshipped a Feathered Serpent god named: Quetzalcoatl.

Hundreds of thousands of men, women, girls and boys were slain on the temples of this god and of others. A priest would cut out the still-beating hearts and offer it to the pagan god.
This was part of their satanic religion: priests and sacrifices ///\\\//victims.

Then Our LADY OF GUADALUPE, (Feast is Dec. 12) appeared in 1531 in the region and miraculously crushed the prevailing idolatry, represented as serpent heads carved in stone.

That is why I am posting this short collection of "The Serpent" from antiquity and also a few references from the Old and New Testaments.

**********************************
Extract:

"...three nights in the sea, in the belly of the whale, or, according to others, in the belly of a sea DRAGON.

IO. Let us note here that the whale, which plays in the heart of the seas, represents, in the Scriptures, the infernal Dragon. Satan and the Angels of darkness seem to have fixed their abode, mainly at the bottom of the seas. Also the legion of Demons that Jesus cast out from a possessed man took refuge in the Sea of Tiberias. S Mat. 8:30.

In Isaiah, XVII. 1, it is marked that God will exterminate Leviathan, this tortuous Serpent; that He will kill the whale that is in the seas.

Estius says that the letter of the text here indicates the demon himself, whom Christ must one day destroy. All interpreters give this passage the same meaning, allegorical and prophetic.

In Job (XXVI, 13.)*, the tortuous Serpent, expelled from Paradise, is this same Leviathan, of whom it is then said that he is the king of all the sons of Pride, and of whom God will play like a bird.

Satan was worshiped in Babylon in this great Serpent that Daniel destroyed. (Dan. XIV, 23.) Satan spoke to Eve through the Serpent; he was the Serpent himself. The whole Church believes that Pharaoh, the oppressor of the people of God, represented the Demon, enemy of faithful Christians. This is why, at Easter, she sings of deliverance from the yoke of Satan in these words: "De duro Pharaonis imperio". Now, the Old Testament calls Pharaoh the Great Dragon of Egypt and his subjects the dragons subject to him: "Contributasti capita Draconum in aquis..... tu confregisti capita Draconis". (Ps. LXXII, 14.)

Isaiah said to the Lord: "Have you not smitten the Superb and wounded the Dragon"? Which fits perfectly with what Job says of the Sea Dragon, of the King of the sons of pride.

Ezekiel also depicts Pharaoh in the colors of pride, when he apostrophizes him thus: Draco magne, qui cubas in medio fluminum tuorum, et dicis: meus est fluvius. ** XXIX 3.

S.John resolves all difficulty when he says that the Dragon, the ancient Serpent, is the Demon, seducer of men. XII. 3, and when he adds that this Serpent is adored by all the wicked, XII, 2, and that he will one day be vanquished for ever (XX, 2, Apoc.).

These flaming Serpents of the Desert, which destroyed the Hebrews, what did they mean, if not the Demons who lose souls and bodies in hell? (Num. XXI, 6.) The Prince of these evil Spirits was bound to the Cross of the Redeemer, and made impossible to do harm as before.

It is certain that the Egyptians worshiped demons. Now, (Sap. XI, 16.) they worshiped the mute Dragons, says Solomon. When S. John the Baptist said of the unbelieving Jews, that they were serpents, a race of vipers, destined to burn in the fire. eternal of Hell, he marked that they were sons of the Demon and victims of hell. (S. Mat., XXIII, 33.)

When Jesus Christ gave his Apostles 'power to tread on dragons (S. Luke X 19),on scorpions and on all the power of the enemy', It is clear that He meant by that term the Spirit of darkness, the Disciples of satan.

It is therefore constant from all this that the Dragon, the Great Fish of the seas, represented the Demon or the ancient Serpent.

[ I have dwelt a little on the proof of this point, because it will serve elsewhere to explain other propositions. Suffice it to point out here that the Dragon which engulfed Jonah perfectly represented the ancient Dragon who, for an instant, by permission from On High, had power over the life of Jesus Christ and believed he could keep him under his domination.]
