Like many other deep-thinkers, I enjoy the act of driving because it offers a bounty of time for thinking through the many issues I tackle on a daily basis. Today, I tackled the issue of driving itself and I realized a few poignant points I figured I would share on this forum.
First, I wondered why it was that I preferred thinking while driving to thinking while sitting in a park, in the bathroom, walking in the woods, etc. Then I considered the actual social phenomenon of driving in and of itself, and here are my conclusions: Driving itself is an environment of objective truth. With the obvious exception of the occasional reckless teenager, driving is a system that remains outside of individual opinion, spin, and subjective position. If you are on the right side of the street, you drive in the direction that those on the right side of the street drive. You stop at red lights. You go at green lights.
The rules of the road remain outside of debate and disagreement, for the most part. Obviously there will be small disagreements over whether or not it's permissible to drive 5 miles over the limit, and other such trivial considerations. But the general gist of driving is unchallenged. We drive the way we do because it works and manages traffic in the most efficient way possible. We negotiate traffic scenarios in a very mathematical way; I can switch to that lane and expedite my journey. I need to fit my vehicle in between others in order to pass a disabled vehicle in the right lane. There are no "alternative lifestyles" on the road. There are no nihilists or subjectivists on the highways... and if there are, they don't last very long.
Just my thought of the day.
