  • Archbishop Gregory Aymond of New Orleans, Louisiana has instructed Catholic schools to stop scheduling social and athletic events on Sundays.

The archbishop had previously asked schools to keep Sundays free, encouraging busy families to attend Mass. He has now made that policy mandatory beginning with the 2014-15 academic year.

Archbishop Aymond said that the policy is directed particularly at Catholic schools that are not affiliated with a diocese.

  • If Catholic parents would set the example, there would have been no need for the bishop's ruling.  Most parents make the wrong choice, marginalizing fellow Catholics who keep the Lord's Day Holy.  As the elder of two children, I never participated in (public) school activities that required Sunday practice, games, etc.  With my younger sibling and six years post Vat. II, sports or other school activities relegated Mass to second place.  I still do not work on Sunday.  If my boss gives me more work than can he accomplished in six days, it is too much.
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.
