If the words on this page were written in cursive, chances are few people under the age of 18 could read them.

That's not a lament - just an observation. The dependency on computers, email and texting for communicating has rendered what we used to call "script" all but obsolete.
May God bless you and keep you

  • What's happening in education is even more serious than that: there are bona fide neurological  changes that are very rapidly occurring because of the moral rot of society, as manifested through the technology

We are changing/devolving in a way that is unprecedented in human history, and its a physical, tangible, measurable phenomenon.

    "But 'tis strange:
And oftentimes, to win us to our harm,
The instruments of darkness tell us truths,
Win us with honest trifles, to betray's
In deepest consequence.." Banquo, from Shakespeare's Macbeth

  • Students are only taught to sign their names in cursive.  They are unable to read a letter or even a simple note in a greeting card.  At least that's what I heard and saw. Perhaps charter and private schools are better.  I don't know.  I know that Montessori schools still teach cursive. They also teach phonetics, square roots and, likely, long division.

But one thing is necessary. Mary hath chosen the best part, which shall not be taken away from her.
    Luke 10:42

  • It was the result of a conspiracy by the ...

    Bic Ballpoint Pen executives.
"Some preachers will keep silence about the truth, and others will trample it underfoot and deny it. Sanctity of life will be held in derision even by those who outwardly profess it, for in those days Our Lord Jesus Christ will send them not a true Pastor but a destroyer."  St. Francis of Assisi

  • I am aware of this issue because I assign my students essays and they are unable to write them by hand because they weren't properly taught --- or taught at all --- and further, have never been required to write in cursive since they first learned it.  Without practice, the skill deteriorates.

Their essays take longer because printing requires the hand to be lifted after each stroke, slowing the student down considerably.  I have told them, since so many of them are close to college age, they will have trouble in college trying to get enough information down in their Blue Books at finals time.

Many do not even know how to sign their name.  I've told them that is dangerous.  A signature is essential to an identity.  Printing on legal docuмents can more easily be copied than a cursive hand.  Some students I have had to teach/re-teach myself.

Most college exams, including essay exams, are taken on a computer these days.  A college-aged cousin of mind has never even heard of a blue book.

  • The schools aren't teaching spelling either.  They are using phonetics.
    Exactly what are they teaching?

They come out of Colleges dumb as bricks.  We see it everyday.  Water world on o Reilly factor proves it.   They are coming out of Ivy League colleges and can't find jobs.

Steve jobs and many who created technology rarely let their own children use any technology.
Then there are countries where they used traditional teaching and using books and they are far advanced then  students using computers.

May God bless you and keep you

Most of my students are in colleges which still use Blue Books.  That includes the Ivy League and entire public college systems. I'm sure there's been a trend toward computer use in many colleges, but I'd like to see statistical proof of "most college exams" being taken on a computer "these days."  That doesn't compute with what I've seen students bring home.

    Viva,
Spelling and phonetics are both part of he same package. One does not preclude the other.

  • In many schools they have ditched spelling altogether.
Parents most of my generation condone this because many aren't the sharpest tools in the shed.

  • Outcome Based (No) education.  The dumbing down to have an easy take over of the USA.

I have seen teens that can not write a letter to a friend, or in a diary, or autograph book.

I really don't know how parents can allow this!

Small composition size paper stapled "book" in which students answer essay questions In humanities subjects. Used very recently. You must purchase these near campus and bring them to your final exam's.
