Some years back, to help wean myself off a decades-long addiction to Coca-Cola, I took to drinking unsweetened iced tea with lemon, and unsweetened iced coffee with a little milk. Now, I find these latter two drinks to be about the most refreshing things on God's earth. I do occasionally relapse into my former "Coke addiction," but, when I do, I try to make sure it's at least the vastly superior Mexican version, in the glass bottle, and sweetened with cane sugar, and not that vile, diabolically ubiquitous goop, HFCS.
Your home-brewed beer sounds particularly intriguing. Must be good at a barbecue. Nothing washes beef down better than beer, in my opinion.
We never had "soda" in the house growing up, my father despised it and knew it was junk sugar-water. I seen a lot of my friends literally become "addicts" that that crap. Even my sister's children went on to become , what I called "coke-heads". and they were all obese, tooth decay and all kinds of mental, emotional and social problems as well. And here's the thing, they really don't drink alcohol or take any drugs. But their sugar diets really screwed them up. they had a coke-bottle in their hand everytime I seen them. It is truly their "drug" of choice.
As for me and my family, I never allowed it either and NONE of my children ever developed a taste or craving for it.
I believe that perhaps after coffee and cigarettes, carbonated, sugar beverages like "coke" are the biggest addiction in America. they might actually be first for all I know, at lot of people don't smoke these days. And I see a lot of kids and younger generation don't drink coffee.
