  • Pope Francis has established a new eparchy—the equivalent of a diocese—for Syro-Malankara Catholics in the US and Canada."
The Eparchy of St. Mary, Queen of Peace, will embrace all the geographical territory of the two countries. Bishop Thomas Mar Eusebius Naickamparambil has been named to be the first bishop of the American eparchy, which will be based in Elmont, New York. There are about 11,500 Syro-Malankara

Catholics in North America today, spread across 19 parishes and missions. The Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, based in India’s state of Kerela, traces its origins to the missionary work of St. Thomas the apostle. The Church now counts nearly 500,00 faithful. Cardinal Baselios Cleemis of Trivandrum is the Major Archbishop of the self-governing Church.

  • In India whole Conciliar dioceses are entrusted to bishops of either the Syro-Malabar or the Syro-Malankara Rites. And if there are significant numbers of adherents of these Syro rites in dioceses controlled by Latin Rite bishops, it is not unusual for them to canvas for eparchies to be created within the existing Latin Rite dioceses.

A week ago I asked an 80 year old priest cousin of mine if someone of the Latin Rite was living in a diocese controlled by a Syro rite bishop, and was also in a parish run by a Syro rite priest, and wanted his child baptized, what rite would be used for the baptism, and would the child belong to the Latin or Syro Rite?. All I got was gibberish for an answer.

Probably what rite the parents belonged too.

This is wonderful news because there's still Catholics in the Eastern Rites, unlike Rome.

it does not matter what rite is used for baptism, the child will be of the rite of its parents, unless they are of mixed rite

Thanks for this info! My 80 yr old priest cousin studied in Rome; was ordained to the Diaconate in 1960 by Cardinal Agagianian, and then to the priesthood by John XXIII, but yet he could not tell me this!.
I presume that in India, new converts to the Faith, living in Syro controlled dioceses would become Syro Malabar/Malankara Catholics?

  •  most likely they would also retain the rite of their parents. unless they are true converts in which case they would probably fall under the traditional diocese which believe it or not is going to be some Syro- rite since the whole area was originally under  the Catholicos of Selusia-Ctesiphon
