New Prescription Eyeglasses

  • So, I just got some new prescription glasses.  Even though I've already had "progressive" lenses, this pair seems to be hard to get used to....particularly when I am reading on the computer.   I have a hard time focusing at times especially on the ends/sides. I don't recall ever having to adjust my head/eye position, etc so much.

Anyone have/had similar issues?  I don't think the Rx is wrong. Just having a really hard time adjusting.  I'm really hoping this will get better.

  • Are the new frames smaller?

  • I had to look up
    Progressive Glasses:
No-line Multifocals For a Younger You
    https://www.allaboutvision.com/lenses/progressives.htm

as i had never heard of them. Now I think that Mine must be progressive trifocals as mine also have no”lines”.

The best thing is to go back to whoever prescibed them and ask for an explanation.

How long have you been wearing this particular model?

  • Quite a number of years ago, I gave up on a pair of progressives after a few days.  Just a couple months ago I got another pair to try.  It really does help to move your head a little more than you normally would and it does take some time getting used to.  I think it took me a few weeks.  This sounds ridiculous but I did look up a YouTube video on them and the eye doctor in the video did a good job showing how to move your head a little more to adjust rather than just moving your eyes because they will hit blurry areas depending on how far away you’re looking. I’ll see if I can find him again. Found it, hope this works to paste it here.  https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwje0MC1ksX6AhW6mIQIHYwuCR4QwqsBegQIJxAB&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DFBJKirbCA2I&usg=AOvVaw0l4LI0-x02PR4vGh-kS8q0

Forget progressives and go with old-fashioned lined bi/tri-focals.  Better yet, take your prescription glasses off completely and wear reading glasses while on the computer.

  • Not sure what "hater" downthumbed your OP.

In any case, after about 2-3 years of never really getting used to progressives, I've dumped them.

Instead, I bought two $10 pairs at my local Dollar General, one at 2.75 magnficiation for reading/computer work and the other at 1.5 for normal activity, driving, etc.  Works great for me.  I would much rather just switch between the two pairs.  Now, if someone has a wider variation from one eye to another, a couple of prescription glasses might be necessary, but even then, I would just get two pairs of glasses.  But everyone is different.

I'm hoping that one day I could afford to get one of those artificial lenses (such as people get after cataracts) and be able to dump the glasses permanently.

I used to have 20/20 vision, but computer work has destroyed my eyes.

I tried that, but can't see well enough to even drive safely without them.  I moved to having two pairs.

Typically as you get older, your eye's lens hardens and you lose the ability to focus for near vision. Your eye doctor compensates for your loss by prescribing more "power" in your reading correction. This means that as you age there is progressively greater difference between your reading and distance corrections, hence a narrower field of perfect vision for any given intermediate focal plane. This means you have to do more searching to find and more difficulty to maintain that focus.

You can thank Adam and Eve.

  • Sometimes the optician measures the gradient incorrectly for the size of the lens. You probably have the right prescription with the wrong measurements . You probably will have to get measured again, especially if you have oversized lenses . That happened to me.

  • I had the same problem a long time ago, I was tilting my head up and down so much that by the end of the day the back of my neck got really sore from bobble heading all day. I solved that by getting bigger (taller) lenses, and also I had to tell them that as they were measuring, to put my pupils are on the lens a little lower, maybe 1/16th of an inch or so lower on the lens than it actually is. So when I look forward I see distance clear and I *have* to tip my head up for reading, but at least I'm not bobble heading any more.

For the computer, I keep my main screen, which is 24", about 30 inches away so I had them make me a separate pair, also progressive, which is about 1/2 the prescription strength and it works ok but not perfect - for the last year or so I've been using a 5 year old pair of glasses I had, also progressive, and that's what works for me. If you're strictly using the laptop, then cheaters from the drug store are probably a good way to go, you just need to experiment which strength.

Funny you say this because I did take out the 6-year old progressive eyeglasses I just replaced to see what it was like with them.  And it was perfectly fine.  Again, I'm unsure why those never had the same problem [maybe older technology?], but I am considering just switching to the old glasses when on the computer for long periods of time if these don't get better.  I've had them almost a week now, so I would think that I would have adjusted already.

I will add that the new ones are definitely an improvement for distance and reading up close. It's clearly the intermediate area that's giving me the problem.

  • I would not give it another thought, stick with the 6 year old glasses when using the laptop and use the new ones for when you're not on the computer.

  • That’s the down side of progressives, having to turn your head for clear peripheral vision.  The stronger the lenses, the more the problem.  May I suggest bifocals and buy a few pairs of cheap reading glasses at Dollar Tree for very close work.  If you do lots of close work and don’t want to be switching glasses all the time, get trifocals.  They give distance, medium, (arm’s length), and very close.

They are literally the same measurements.  It's one of the reasons why I chose them!

I will check in with them the next time I'm in their area.  I have these about a week now.

Thanks for the comments all.  I think I will use my old glasses at the computer at least until I can get back to the office to see what they say, etc.
