Title: Need Advice for What to Write in Christmas Cards
Post by: MrsZ on December 14, 2010, 04:19:47 PM
We're not really close to my H's side of the family ... meaning that my H and I do not have a regular relationship with them...or my uncle on my side of the family, either.  My H talks to his parent's often, but it's just "how's the weather" and "the fishing" and blah, blah, blah.  I email my SIL occasionally, but it's just about as interesting and meaningless.

Anyway, we only have a few family members to send cards to and I usually just sign "love" at the bottom of some preprinted nice Christmas wish.  I don't really have the room to write updates and I have no interest in writing in a Christmas letter (no one cares, anyway), but was thinking it would be nice to add a little personal message just to be doing the better thing ... than just a signature.

Any ideas? Or have I described a useless, impossible scenario?

Oh, and FYI ... we only get one or two Christmas cards a year in response to the 10-12 we send out.  Yes, we are not only loved but popular as well! :)

I'm guessing that since you're Catholic lying is out of the question.

So how about, Thinking of You and Yours During This Christmas Season.

It's not lying because you will be thinking about them during the Christmas season since you're writing out the cards during Advent.  And if you don't really love them, you won't be lying when you write the word love.

It's not much, but I hope it helps.

I am sure you wish them well, so you could write:

Wishing you and yours the best (or blessings)?? during this (holy)?? Christmas Season and always.

Or some variation of that.

And what Cheryl suggested is good or a variation of it.

There must be a few diferent niceties you could write which are true like..

I hope this card finds you all well and good health.

Etc.

Not a single family member of mine or my husband's is Catholic.  In fact, many are atheist/agnostic and most are Protestant.  I always write something like this:

May the blessings of Our Lord Jesus Christ and the grace of Our Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary fill your hearts and homes this Christmas and throughout the year.

Yep, it's long but I do pray exactly that for our family and I hope one day the Holy Spirit will use our Christmas card to lead someone to Christ.

Geta nice religious themed card, most mine this yr are Nativity scenes......then I just sign my name.......no soppy handwritten messages.......

The Prots in my family appreciate it greatly, the non-religious dont comment....

works out better than writing a long message and getting a lot of flack, that can turn into near occasions or occasions of sin...etc

subtle often is best...

Well I always send religious cards, always the Holy Family, beautiful artwork and a pre-printed religious message inside ... I just wanted to do more than put a signature in there ... and I like the suggestions of "thinking of you" or "hoping this card finds you healthy and well..."  that works for me.

I was started to wonder whether I should continue sending religious cards to the atheist/liberals in our family ... in the past I felt it was my duty as a Catholic .. this morning I'm wavering (I don't know why ... cowardice?)

But I know it's the right thing to do .. and frankly, I imagine it's expected anyway "Oh you know MrsZ, crazed zealot and all that" (smirk)

Thank you all for the suggestions

I would, though you may want to think about ones more subtle, sometimes a quieter approach is better, feel them out and decide.....the more overtly Catholic cards i send to fellow Catholics or at least Prots that are open minded that way.........I havea uncle that is not overly fundie, but goes to a fundie Baptist that has a preacher educated @ Bob Jones...they appreciate a Christian themed card..again, depends on how they act/react might determine what approach to take

whatever you decide to write dont forget to add at the bottom  "thanks for your card it was beautiful".
Of course knowing full well that they never send you one.
