On January 21, 1793, King Louis XVI was guillotined in Paris at the Place de la Révolution. His severed head was displayed to the people and cast down as a challenge to all the sovereigns of Europe. The people of the Vendée would not accept this sacrilege. A month later, triggered by the conscription decreed by the Convention, they rose up en masse against revolutionary tyranny and religious persecution.
Rallying behind the exemplary leaders they had chosen, these people fought heart and soul, even unto the ultimate sacrifice. The Vendée uprising and its indiscriminate suppression through the Terror constitute one of the most tragic episodes in French history. The death toll remains uncertain: 200,000... 400,000... 600,000 dead...? The Vendée continues to challenge history.
