Fort au Fou (1963)

During the French war with Hi Chi Min's Viêt Minh in Indochina, a village of Vietnamese catholics, together with their priest take refuge at a french base camp, the Fort au Fou. The film contrasts the strong catholicism of the Vietnamese refugees with the lack of faith of their French colonial masters.

O Pagador de Promesas. (Aka The Given Word) 1962. Brazilian film in Portuguese with large English subtitles.  A poor man from the Brazilian countryside makes a promise to Saint Bárbara to carry a cross – like  Jesus – all the way from his city to Saint Bárbara’s church in the state capital, if his prayer to cure his sick donkey is answered.  Upon the recovery of his donkey, he leaves on his journey. He makes it to the church, but the priest refuses to accept the cross once he comes to know the context of the promise.

The Flowers of St. Francis.  1950.  In Italian with large English subtitles. In a series of simple and joyous vignettes, director Roberto Rossellini and co-writer Federico Fellini lovingly convey the teachings of St. Francis.  Cast with monks from the Norcera Inferiore Monastery.
