    I'm not sure if it's a mortal sin, but it's definitely acting rather cowardly (no offense). I think you should start doing it. If they (being Catholic especially) get offended, that's there problem, not yours.

    They are catholic in name only. Not only do they accept Benedict XVI as pope and the V2 sect as the catholic church, but they are also in many ways heretics/agnostics/in a state of mortal sin. Is it a sin for me to pray with them before dinner since they are basically undeclared heretics?

    I think the Church permits praying before meals if you live with them, but that is yet another thing you should check with a Traditional priest just to make sure.
    Please ignore ALL of my posts. I was naive during my time posting on this forum and didn’t know any better. I retract and deeply regret any and all uncharitable or erroneous statements I ever made here.

  • CC,
    Now that you have a priest to consult, I hope that you will ask him the questions that you have asked us here.  I am sure that he will review with you the conditions that make a sin mortal.

    Here is the question from the Baltimore catechism on mortal sin:

    What three things are necessary to make a sin mortal?
    To make a sin mortal these three things are needed:

    1.the thought, desire, word, action, or omission must be seriously wrong or considered seriously wrong;
    2.the sinner, must be mindful of the serious wrong;
    3.the sinner must fully consent to it.

    One more thing, is it objectively a mortal sin to purposely not make the sign of the cross before a meal? I live with novus ordo parents and family, and I never do it because I don't want to bring attention to myself. But recently I have thought that my hesistation is probably cowardice. I often think of Our Lord's words: "Those who deny me before men, I will deny before the father in heaven." Lately, my cowardice in this area has made meal times very stressfull in my home, especially tonight when I will be having thanksgaving dinner with all agnostic lapsed/heretical novus ordites.

    I am rather astounded the NO parents don't make the sign of the cross.  Do they pray before meals at all?
    Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir
