  • Hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Paris on May 26 to protest the country’s new law allowing legal recognition of same-sex marriage.

The massive protest was the latest in a series of popular demonstrations against the legislation that was pushed forward by President Francois Hollande. Government officials had sought to discourage participation in the rally, and police officials placed the official estimate of the crowd’s size at only 150,000. But organizers claimed a million participants, and the Reuters news service offered an estimate of “several hundred thousand.”

Interior minister Manuel Valls had asked parents not to bring children to the demonstration, saying that violence might erupt. His predictions proved inaccurate during the rally itself, but after the demonstration concluded, dozens of angry protesters clashed with police and scores were arrested.

Opponents of same-sex marriage have vowed to continue their political battle, aiming at the next elections.

I think if I were a french politician it would be time for me to get on the Traditional marriage bandwagon.

A legitimately traditional politician would find it impossible to achieve success.

He should achieve sucess if he comes from a district that is predominantly traditional.

  • Though many Americans have long considered France to be the epitome of liberal social attitudes, in no other country has the world seen the magnitude of a movement whose cause it is to defend traditional marriage and family.

  • Two dozen members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe recently signed a statement decrying police actions against pro-family protestors in France.

“Hundreds of walkers and protesters were brutalized, gassed, arbitrarily arrested and jailed for 24 hours and more,” the lawmakers stated in reference to protests in recent months. “Reports from lawyers and NGOs indicate that more than 600 individuals have been arrested and jailed.”

The Observatory on Intolerance and Discrimination against Christians, which docuмents anti-Christian actions in Europe, reported that “tear gas attacks and beatings by the police, arbitrary arrests, solitary confinement, illegal fingerprint storing, and countless other human rights violations were conducted by the French [police] against peaceful mass demonstration opposing government policy on gαy marriage and adoption.”
