  • It seems like there are a lot of options now for women looking for modest dresses for Sunday wear and even daily wear out and about.

What could be a suitable alternative to sweat pants or jeans for women working on the farm/fields and/or for winter weather?  What did women USED to wear that could be practicable today?  When winter weather starts, it seems like the pants come out for women.

At home, in the house, it seems like the sweat pants also are the favorite due to comfort... is it just a matter of getting past what's "comfortable" or are there comfortable alternatives
that are also modest and practical?

My aunt (fundamentalist Protestant) wore a dress over some sort of slacks for gardening on her small farm, when weather or circuмstances dictated some kind of leg covering.

Her standards of modesty were identical to those of traditional Catholics.

  • Makes sense.  Is that what they did in the old times too?  Like, say 1700s or before?

Are some kind of pants underneath the only practical way to keep clean in the dirt / warm in the winter?

In Korea the traditional dress starts with a kind of pants for both men and women, and a overgarment - this goes back hundreds of years.

Back then they'd be lucky to have two dresses, a heavier one for winter and a lighter one for summer.

  • Traditionally, women’s skirts were layered underneath. Underneath the dress was a petticoat, and under that, pantaloons. If you were of the working class, you could add a long apron to go over it all to keep your dress from getting soiled.

I don’t wear sweat pants around the house in the winter but instead I wear these really warm leggings that aren’t meant to be worn by themselves, but under things. I wear my dress or skirt over that. Of course, a warm pair of socks that meet the leggings so that no skin is exposed.

I do farm chores in the winter. I wear what I mentioned before plus a long winter coat that goes below the knees which keeps the skirt from blowing about in the wind. Add to that a heavy pair of waterproof boots, a wool hat covered by the hood on my coat and some warm gloves and I’m ready to milk the goat in zero degrees! :laugh1:
Religion clean and undefiled before God and the Father, is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation: and to keep one's self unspotted from this world.

  • I always wear some sort of leggings or homemade pantaloons under my dresses.  I never wear pants without a skirt or dress on top.  You mentioned sweat pants so I will mention that not even my boys wear them in general.  They usually wear denim, corduroy or kaki style pants

I have 3 little boys and have to be ready to run after them in an instance and climb or follow them whenever they are going.  So, having a flowing skirt with proper attire underneath is a must.  In the summer cotton and in the winter sometimes something thicker.

My mother and I both wear denim skirts for skiing with denim or wool leggings or pants.

For horseback riding and farm work we wore dresses with pants underneath.

  • The general answer is some kind of leggings, tights, or knee length shorts or culottes with a half-calf or longer skirt or dress, season and activity depending. Having lived with Old Order Amish of the very conservative variety, that is exactly what they do.  I discovered that Amish dress with apron and pantaloon type pants and slip underneath is cooler than shorts in summer and the woolen long version with wool stockings is warmer in winter than just pants or pants over t-shirt knit long underwear.  Try it out, ladies!

If your skirts do happen to fly up, there’s nothing to be seen.  If working out or the like, Amish ladies don’t get wedgies!
