  • What should a woman in her late 20s wear to go to Mass? What should she wear specifically in terms of makeup, clothes etc?

In aother words what would be appropriate?

  • It's very straightforward.

Wear a dress or a skirt, wear a hat or a mantilla.

'A dress cannot be called decent which is cut deeper than two fingers breadth under the pit of the throat; which does not cover the arms at least to the elbows; and scarcely reaches a bit beyond the knees. Furthermore, dresses of transparent materials are improper.'

    Pius XII

  • Speaking of modesty, get a load of the conversation I'm having with msKCleigh in the comments here:

Here're some comprehensive tips and guides.

And two other concise ones, with tips.

No makeup, long skirt, loose top, preferably with something else over. Head covering preferably plain, the point is to cover, I know folks love the mantillas and try to help people into headcovering because it's 'pretty' but that's the precise opposite of the reason for wearing a head covering.

Hmm, just a note, the website attributes that quote to the Cardinal Vicar of Pope Pius XI. Though actually, I've seen it often repeated and attributed further too.

There's nothing wrong with "pretty" as long as it isn't showy or gaudy in a "look at me!" kind of way.  We're Catholics, not Amish.  We're allowed to wear color and pretty patterns and to enjoy beautiful art and music and enjoy quality literature.

Light, unobtrusive makeup is acceptable.  It's not prohibited or required ... just allowed and just like everything else should be subtle and moderate.

If you are a nun, than you will obviously eschew the things of this world, including the "vanity" of caring how you look. That's for your greater sanctification so that you can make a sacrifice and be of benefit to saving souls.

For those of us called to marriage, we are obligated to care about the things of the world for the sake of our husbands, and that includes our appearance, within the bounds of modesty and decorum.

  • There's a consensus of the saints on the issue.

That is my method. What they agree upon, that is the way.

I know it's hard to change, but we can always begin anew.

  • What about Jєωelry?

Is it okay to wear a necklace and not a crucifix? Is a cross okay if its not a crucifix and can you wear a crucifix and a necklace together?

Are pierced ears okay with small studs or hoops?

I wear skirts or dresses that fall at least just below my knees.  In the winter I wear full length because I get cold.

I have all sorts, mostly skirts.  Some dresses these days are very tight fitting especially about the buttocks.  So one must be quite careful, IMO.

A slim form fitting dress, even if it is knee length, can be quite immodest.

I do not wear form fitting blouses, either, and I wear a sleeveless t-shirt underneath.

I wear low heeled or flat heeled shoes.

I do not mostly wear black.

I don't not wear Jєωelry any more.  I do have a set of pearl earrings and necklace that my husband gave me for Mother's Day a few years ago.  I find that quite acceptable, but dangling earrings and big baubles seem flashy to me.   IMO, simple is elegant.

A wear only a small amount of makeup when I go to Mass.  During the week, I do not wear any at all unless I have an appointment.

I think women can dress modestly without looking like they are in mourning.

Most of the women dress the way I do.  Some of the young girls wear low cut blouses occasionally, but most do not.

In winter, I wear a hat.  In warm weather I wear a lace mantilla.  I do have others that I made which are not lace, but I think some of those look like bandanas and I prefer to wear my finest to Mass.

Women often struggle with their vanity.  Even little girls want to wear pretty mantillas.  This is an area where many can become scrupulous, IMO.
