Quote from: Telesphorus

'A dress cannot be called decent which is cut deeper than two fingers breadth under the pit of the throat; which does not cover the arms at least to the elbows; and scarcely reaches a bit beyond the knees. Furthermore, dresses of transparent materials are improper.'

Pius XII

Hmm, just a note, the website attributes that quote to the Cardinal Vicar of Pope Pius XI. Though actually, I've seen it often repeated and attributed further too.

What should a woman in her late 20s wear to go to Mass? What should she wear specifically in terms of makeup, clothes etc?

In aother words what would be appropriate?

Here're some comprehensive tips and guides.

And two other concise ones, with tips.

No makeup, long skirt, loose top, preferably with something else over. Head covering preferably plain, the point is to cover, I know folks love the mantillas and try to help people into headcovering because it's 'pretty' but that's the precise opposite of the reason for wearing a head covering.

There's nothing wrong with "pretty" as long as it isn't showy or gaudy in a "look at me!" kind of way.  We're Catholics, not Amish.  We're allowed to wear color and pretty patterns and to enjoy beautiful art and music and enjoy quality literature.

Light, unobtrusive makeup is acceptable.  It's not prohibited or required ... just allowed and just like everything else should be subtle and moderate.

If you are a nun, than you will obviously eschew the things of this world, including the "vanity" of caring how you look. That's for your greater sanctification so that you can make a sacrifice and be of benefit to saving souls.

For those of us called to marriage, we are obligated to care about the things of the world for the sake of our husbands, and that includes our appearance, within the bounds of modesty and decorum.
