Mitch Daniels has been a good governor for Indiana.  I say this because he took a financially insolvent state and, in spite of the current depression, made it fairly stable financially, kept the spending in check, and did not unduly raise taxes (and I don't think he raised any state taxes, though, through his leadership, he has encouraged some tax increases at local government levels).  He has been against most socially liberal legislation because most of it requires additional State spending which is simply not available.

On the other hand....

On the so-called social-issues, however, Mitch Daniels is not one that can be trusted.  For the most part, he has been good but only because the State legislature doesn't send him a lot of socially liberal bills.  For many years, the State Senate has been dominated by socially conservative Republicans so even when the State House has had a small Democrat majority, they have been unable to expand liberal ideals very much (if at all).  

As I said, he's been a good governor for the State of Indiana.  I would not vote for him, however, for President of the United States.
