  • While reading about the murder of two nuns in MS, I came across this:

The Rev. Greg Plata, sacramental minister at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Lexington where the women led Bible study for years, said Saturday he does not think people at the church knew Sanders.

What is a "sacramental minister" in a "Catholic" church?  He is labeled with the title Rev. so I would have assumed he was a priest in the NO, but then they say he is a sacramental minister???

    Any ideas?

    Sacramental Minister

A priest assigned to perform sacramental ministry in a parish whose pastoral care has been entrusted to a pastoral administrator.

So this is a term growing out of the shortage of priests.  They're giving duties that don't involve sacraments over to "pastoral administrators" and have visiting priests running around doling out sacraments.  IOW divide and conquer.

The "pastoral administrator" is a lot like a Protestant "minister."  Notice they don't bother to mention if the pastoral administrator is or is not a woman.

20 years ago I saw a woman doing a "Eucharistic Service" at a Novus Ordo altar, which was everything from a Newmass EXCEPT the Consecration -- she used hosts from the tabernacle, which are obtained in her ceremonial trek about 50 feet West where the tabernacle is in exile (a space that used to be a confessional built into the wall but remodeled into a niche to contain the tabernacle when they moved it off the main altar).

    From the linked site:

    Quote
Rodney Earl Sanders, 46, of Kosciusko, Miss., was arrested and charged in the deaths of Sister Margaret Held and Sister Paula Merrill, Mississippi Department of Public Safety spokesman Warren Strain said late Friday. Both women were 68.

Willie March, the sheriff of Holmes County where the killings occurred, said Saturday he had been briefed by police from the town where the killings occurred and Mississippi Bureau of Investigation officials who took part in Sanders’ interrogation.

Sanders confessed in the interrogation to the killings and gave no reason for the crimes, March said.

Sanders was convicted last year of a felony DUI, said Grace Simmons Fisher, a spokeswoman for the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

He was later released from prison and is currently on probation.

Sanders was also convicted of armed robbery in Holmes County, sentenced in 1986 and served six years, Fisher said.

    ...
The sheriff said they had been stabbed.

Sister Margaret Held, 68 — impressionable and idealistic — was committed to ending racism and poverty...

    So he is a priest...
    Hmmm...
    Sacramental minister is gender neutral.
    Priest is not.
