  • I could understand the frustration of a father in this situation --

But it's not like he's getting upset because she's going astray or losing her soul. He wants her to get a job outside the house at 15 -- that's not going to make her non-worldly. In fact, it would make it EASIER for her to find a boyfriend, etc. Not exactly something a Catholic would be pushing.

He also has no problem with materialism -- as long as "she works for it".

And he mentioned that his daughter was disrespectful to "her dad, her mom, and her stepmom" -- so this guy is at least partway to blame for his daughter's behavior. Broken homes are *not* as good as a traditional family (mom and dad that love each other and stay togehter). That's just a law of nature.

Lastly, he seems to be giving in to his own anger and inclinations -- why not take that laptop to the pawn shop or sell it on Craigslist for cheap? At least then he'd have a couple hundred bucks to spend. Executing a laptop? Really?

Heck, he could reset the thing to factory defaults (removing *everything* of his daughter's) and put a password on it -- I'm sure his 15 year old daughter wouldn't be able to circuмvent that. Especially if he locked it up. I guess he's afraid he might "cave" later?

It also sounds like his daughter is having a hard time living up to his expectations. "When I was her age, I was on my own, working two jobs..." at 15 years old?  seriously? Who can live up to that?

  • I think I figured out why he shot the laptop --

Which would be more intimidating to a future, unwanted boyfriend Hannah brings home?

    A) Dad got upset and sold my laptop
    B) Dad got upset and shot my laptop 8 times with hollow point rounds

Let's face it --  "sold my laptop" implies some emotional control (which makes a person FAR less scary). And you can't sell a person at a pawn shop, but people can be shot as easily as a laptop...

So I guess he's giving up $150-$250 of value in exchange for some "don't mess with me" reputation.

Anyhow, all I could think about during the video was, "How is Hannah going to react to this? Look how he's pushing her firmly down the path of rebellion, making the situation much worse."

He forgot that she is not a boy.

  • Sure, the man might have "paid his dues" and was hard working back in the day, but what about lately?

In other words, I think some of his reputation for "hard work" might be resting on his laurels.

    Why do I say that?

It's not exactly the hallmark of hard working to have *two children*. Especially two older kids, who take care of their own laundry, sweep the kitchen & living room, take care of the dishes, etc.

Sounds like mom & dad have plenty of free time. Speaking as a parent of 4 young children, I can say I'd have a lot more free time if I only had 2 and they were older!

And what are mom & dad doing with their free time? Playing around on their own computer/tablet/laptop, and other gadgets? There has to be a reason Hannah thinks she should be doing less work. Maybe the parents are engaging in a bit of "do as I say, not as I do."

We're not getting the whole story here.

a trad Catholic would have tried a different method but this is a typical American 2 child family that finds nothing wrong with contraception.

It is probably the fathers fault for his daughter's behavior

Indeed, I smelled the "Protestant work ethic" all over this story right away.

This appeals to a segment of the population who are rightfully tired of children bullying their parents.  Of course, shooting a computer because your daughter mouthed off a little on Facebook is a stupid thing to do that can only be appreciated by cretinized Americans.  But then, this is a nation with an insatiable appetite for animalistic, moronic, knuckle-dragging stupidity in all forms, where someone is considered more trustworthy if they have bad grammar, show they're "regular guys" by watching football and reading comic books, and claim not to speak furrign languages.

ONLY in America could some goateed guy in a ten-gallon hat shooting a computer be seen as admirable.  It is ludicrous.  Dig this up in fifty years when America is a distant memory and you will see how surreal the environment we live in really is.  This Wild West image that people have been sold as denoting "authenticity" is nothing but pure Fellini weirdness.
