  • I read an out-of-print Life of Christ at the seminary, but I can't remember the author's name.

It might have started with an F.

It basically took all 4 Gospels and reconciled them (a concordance) but also included Catholic commentary and historical details to flesh out the story. It was fact-based rather than "private revelation" based.

It would be difficult to travel to Winona just to peruse the seminary library, so I'm hoping that someone else has read it.

If anyone has read a book like this, please post it in this thread. I need some author names; I know I'll recognize it if I see it.

  • At first, I thought you might be talking about Bishop Fulton Sheen's book, Life of Christ because he tells the story of Jesus in which he reconciles the four Gospels very well.  The out of print version of his book uses the Douay-Rheims bible in its quotations.  The new version uses the New American Standard bible and sometimes the quotes don't make sense in context.  His book has a lot of Catholic commentary and historical details and the book is in no way based on private revelation.

The edition I have was printed in 1958.

The first chapter is:  The Only Person Ever Pre-announced.

An excellent book. I read it for Lent several years ago.

  • Thanks for your help, but no luck so far.

I *might* be able to look it up, as I used to keep a log of books I read back in those days. (It was several sheets of notebook paper, front and back.)

    What a Life!
By Tim in AZ on May 24, 2009
    Format: Hardcover
Have you ever wondered who the Pharisees and Sadducees really were? Ever wonder what a Procurator did? Have you ever read the Gospels and maybe felt a little disconnected from the time and place about which they spoke? This book can help you with answers to those questions and more. This is a highly scholarly book, yet written in an accessible and most readable style. The author fills in the gaps many Christians might have regarding the place, the time, and the characters of the Gospels. I highly recommend this book for anyone yearning for a deeper insight into the life and teachings of Jesus, especially those looking for a more complete discussion of the social structure and Jєωιѕн practices of the time.

Excellent, Scientific, Historic, Precise. READ IT!
By Carl B. Carroll on November 13, 2010

This is a very well written text which is careful, prudent, academic, scientific and yet reverent.

Although not a novel nor fiction, it is hard to put down and hard to read only once.

It is a MUST READ for anyone of any faith.

    Best life of Christ
By Joanne Miller Laird on November 4, 2010

This book was recommended by my 93 year old Chaplain who said it was the best and I agree after reading it. A great reference to understand stories in the New Testament. I have already bought about 8 books for gifts.
