I have told them, since so many of them are close to college age, they will have trouble in college trying to get enough information down in their Blue Books at finals time.
Most college exams, including essay exams, are taken on a computer these days. A college-aged cousin of mind has never even heard of a blue book.

And what is their purpose or usefulness? I am none the wiser for your description.
Again, their purpose is for the writing of essay final exams in subjects generally requiring those, such as English, foreign languages, history, anthropology, etc. It's been the traditional method of examination in the humanities and social sciences at many institutions of higher learning. (I didn't invent the idea, just reporting on it.)
