Title: Knock Shrine
Post by: Marlelar on February 23, 2018, 12:01:51 AM
Does anyone know when the "new" church was built?  Was the original torn down?  I cannot find this information on the website.

I know very little about Knock but a search brought up Wiki first (of course) and found this

Quote
The complex incorporates five churches including the Apparition Chapel, Parish Church and Basilica, a Religious Books’ Centre, Caravan and Camping Park, Knock Museum, Café le Chéile and Knock House Hotel. Services at the Shrine include organised pilgrimages, daily Masses and Confessions, Anointing of the Sick, Counselling Service, Prayer Guidance and Youth Ministry.[9] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knock_Shrine#cite_note-9) While the original church still stands, a new Apparition chapel with statues of Our Lady, St Joseph, the Lamb and St John the Evangelist, has been built next to it. Knock Basilica is a separate building showing a tapestry of the apparition

I know very little about the apparition at Knock. I just realized that while there was lots of talk about Guadalupe, Fatima and Lourdes- we here in the states never really heard about Knock. I wonder why? Maybe Our Lady of Knock was more venerated in parts of the country with higher concentrations of Irish than here in the western states? But then, the other apparitions were in foreign (to me) countries as well... ? I will have to do some reading this month regarding it.

As an Irishman, I can confirm the information above.

Knock was probably not well known because there was no verbal message of Our Lady.

There is speculation as to the purpose of the apparition. One theory is that it had to do with la Salette. The Secret of la Salette was approved only 4 days prior to that apparition. A Heavenly approbation of the secret?

As for the modern monstrosity which they call a church, it was built sometime in the 70's/80's I think, obviously to conform with the spirit of Vatican II, with another pretext being to accommodate large numbers of pilgrims.

A few years ago they were taking out the Novus Ordo altar in it, and as they were doing so a large number of rats came crawling out. So reports go. Usually though, the rats in Knock  are not of the tailed and furry kind. Nonetheless it is a great place to visit and the resistance organizes a pilgrimage there every year.

I think it is the only apparition w/o a "message".  Oh, there was Zeitun too.

If I ever go to Europe I would want to do a tour of all the shrines.  I'd probably have to be there for 6 months!

I found it interesting but not strange that the Knock website gives no importance to the old church. And it's not user friendly except to prospective donors.

Me too.  I saw a docuмentary from the late 70's or 80's and it showed an army of helpers both male and female to help the infirm.  No mention on the site of whether they are still there or not.
