  • At what age do you think your children should start kindergarten?
More parents are putting off a child's kindergarten entry so he or she will be a little older than the classmates. It's a phenomenon known as redshirting.

"The reasons parents choose to redshirt their child vary, depending on the child's emotional, social and academic readiness to join school," Dana Vela, president of Sunrise Preschools, in Arizona, said in an interview with ABCNews.com.

  • Be careful, everyone home schools here. Lol.

I think 5 years old is good. Worked for all of my kids. Mind you, the teacher was awesome.

  • Not being an advocate of early childhood education I think 8 is a good age to start formal education, particularly for boys who are less able to settle down to desk work.

  • I started school early. It worked out okay at first, because I was bright enough to keep up, but it caught up with me around 8th grade and I had to be homeschooled so I didn't go crazy. I was always top of my class and in the gifted program, and eventually I was just too far behind developmentally to keep up at the level I was accustomed to.

I think 6 or 7 is good... it really depends on the child and how they do with "informal" education at home. I like multi-age classrooms, like Montessori. They bridge this gap well, imo.

  • I don't know where you're at, but in California you cannot enter a 4yo into Kindergarten. The law was passed a year or two ago, and they're gradually phasing the cutoff age a month each year to eliminate the possibility of a 4yo in Kindergarten. I think next year is the last 'month' they'll need to bump it up.

  • I was five when I started first grade.  But I was homeschooled.  I graduated at 16 and started college at 17.

All of my siblings started at five as well, except for the youngest, who was six.

It really depends on the child, and I think girls may be ready slightly earlier than boys.

Amen.  At the age of reason.  Catholics shouldn't follow the template of the government schools.

  • Children can learn to read when young. That doesn't mean they have to be at table or sit still for an hour. Reading can be taught a few minutes here and there.

  • Are not age to start homeschool and age to start public school completely different questions?

  • They are indeed.

My kids all started at 5, and it worked out fine.

  • 5 is a good age. It was catholic schools many years ago, of course, which initiated this age.

  • Children are learning before age 5.  They know how to put on temper tantrums, ha!  They learn their colors and shapes. Homeschooling started at age 5 and 6 for us depending on the child and worked out fine.

In AZ the gov't is trying to get kindergarden  year round.  That is too much.  I have seen them on the school buses and it just drains them.  I think it is just a way for the gov't to start their indoctrinating as early as they can.  The schools can find problems and even bring in CPS.

    Just homeschool!

Same in AZ for public schools, but charter and private can have their own policies. I wonder if that is possible?

  • Every state has their age that requires mandatory attendance. That age may be different than the age the schools will accept them. For example a child may start school at 5 but the mandatory attendance age may not be until until 8.
In this example, if a parent home educated, they would not have to meet law until age 8.
