  • May we cross ourselves with a crucifix?  Or can only priests do that? :confused1:

  • Well, I have done that with my rosary crucifix in my hand. To bad we can not find some residents priests to help us on this board. Maybe from the SSPX or CMRI. Bet they would.

  • I'm trying to learn more about the Rosary (for those of you unaware, I've only been a trad since january), but there's things I don't understand.

What is specifically meant when they tell us to stop SAYING the Rosary and start PRAYING it?

I can PRAY and meditate on the Hail Mary, but I am not familiar on how to meditate on a mystery and a Hail Mary both at the same time.

I mean, what is supposed to be going thru my mind?  When I say "full of grace" I meditate on knowing that she is filled with grace, but tossing in mysteries confuse me.

I read Garland of Roses, a booklet published by The Slaves of the Immaculate Heart, but I'm still confused.

Help a young nooby trad out?

  • Yes, you can cross yourself with a sacramental like a Crucifix.

That is one of its purposes, besides being an object of our veneration.

Yes, it is normally done when starting (or ending) the Rosary.

    As for the Rosary --

You can either meditate on the mysteries (picture the events, contemplate what you see, meditate on the virtues they are showing, etc.) or you can meditate on the words of the Hail Mary themselves. Humans can't actually think about two things at once, so you have to pick one :)

You can switch back and forth too -- basically, though, you don't want to fret about it too much. The devil wants to discourage you from praying the Rosary, since it's the surest weapon against his temptations and subtle tricks. If you discover your mind wandering, gently return to the meditation. As long as you're not WILLFULLY thinking about something else, it is not your fault. Our minds wander; we can't control them perfectly. Our imagination is part of our lower nature, which we can't control perfectly (ever since the Fall).

  • I forgot to answer one of your questions ("praying" vs. "saying" the Rosary)

I think what they mean is to not just say it like a robot, automatically, without thinking about it.

To pray it, our Will should be into it, if not our heart (if possible).
