  • I was just wondering what people's thoughts are on jobs after the three days of darkness. I'm sure there will be jobs, but for a while I've been wondering what kind aside from basic ones such as farming or something. And I keep wondering what will change when it comes to qualifying for a job, such as having to have a degree. Any thoughts?

  • I  doubt I will be getting my social security check, so I better pay attention to this thread.   :scared2:

I have a feeling most people will be in their eternity, and those left will only be concerned with food, clothing and shelter, and of course the Faith, which should be first on this list.

So if you plan on surviving this chastisement look in that direction, food, clothing or shelter.
    Please pray for my soul.

  • Your definitely going to see legions of cottage industries pop up out of nowhere, so more than likely you will be either self employed in producing something yourself or providing a service, or you will be working under someone in your community who  already is.

What a person needs to do is to think about what their own needs are and figure out how he can provide those things for himself. For example, you currently make use of clothes, toiletries, household utilities and appliances, food, fuel, storage containers, etc.  All of those are just a few categories of products that have a demand that will NOT be able to be satisfied by the then non-existent industry that we have now, most especially since foreign trade will be extremely limited (that is if it exists at all). If you can figure out how to produce some of those products and sell them in your community at a profit then you have yourself a livelihood .

If you could manufacture toilet paper in a situation like that what makes you think it's not going to sell?

  • Aside from a Game Conservationist and farmer, I think I'll be the town butcher. I might have to join the Great Monarch's army and go to Rhine and get some experience for the job though.

Food for thought. Imagining what it will be like after, makes for a lot of that.

Assuming of course, one makes it that far, and doesn't make the mistake of Lot's wife.
    Sincerely,

  • I'm curious... what types of needs would we need (I know 'need' is relative) which we could prepare ourselves for now?

And for the record... Cath Sam- lets join and enlist inthe great leader's army together! lol

  • Thanks for your response, CS. That was a good post. Yeah, I was thinking along the lines of self business such as farming, or working under someone else as far as what jobs would be available. I don't think I'll farm, I'll find something else to produce and sell for a nice profit.

Yes! Actually I'm saving to buy the supplies to learn to do this at home lol... unfortunately I don't see it as a necessity (this is where jokes come in right?) when it comes down to it...

  • I don't know -- when pure water is hard to come by, beer is the main beverage people drink.

It will certainly be a useful skill to have. Necessary or no, people will be willing to part with some of THEIR goodies (food, clothing, misc. wealth) to be able to celebrate/drown their sorrows once in a while.

Desserts aren't necessary either, but every down-to-earth, sane society had bakers/pastry makers that managed to make a living. Kids have birthdays, feast days occur, etc.

There are lots of decent trades besides "farmer".

It helps to think of things by dabbling in a down-to-earth life today. For example, everything you use on an average day (particular one spent outside -- not "at the office") try to think: How would I procure this item or do this task if there were no stores to buy equipment from?

You quickly realize how valuable a shovel or hoe is. Imagine trying to make one from scratch!  Make a huge fire with lots of coals, try to beat some old metal into the shape of a hoe, and somehow attach it to a wooden pole... What wooden pole? Cut down a tree and somehow whittle it into a smooth pole...you get the idea.

Makes you want to buy a few shovels and sock 'em away for a rainy day, doesn't it?

Ditto for belts, shoes, hats, gloves, fertilizer, you name it.
