  • Do you mean Church teaching?  I would be surprised if there were, but it is certainly an interesting question.  If I may ask, what motivates you to ask?
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

  • Probably the thread about Disney reminded me. I know plain protestants do not approve of it.

Incidentally, тαℓмυdic Judaism relates many tales with an absurdly anthropomorphic conception of the deity.  It is hard to imagine such beliefs are really held by the rabbis, so it tends to hint at the truth: that тαℓмυdic Judaism has an esoteric dimension that has little to do with God of the Old Testament.

  • Anthropomorphism is one of the things that really irked me when I had a TV. It was the consistent lying implicit in the language of so-called nature shows promoting anthropomorphism. This carries over into our daily life when people give their pets treatment which should only be given to humans. For example, buying Christmas gifts for animals.

I know many of you pet owners out there in Cathinfoland will disagree with me, but...  another example is keeping animals in the home. Our cat does come in and out as she desires and we agree to her wishes, but some people just go too far.

Kissing animals and allowing them to lick your face! I don't believe this is how man is meant to have mastery over the animals, as Genesis commands us.
Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.

Excessive fondness for animals seems to be part of the perversion of the modern world.

    I agree.
Please ignore ALL of my posts. I was naive during my time posting on this forum and didn’t know any better. I retract and deeply regret any and all uncharitable or erroneous statements I ever made here.

  • I agree people put animals in wrong places but they can provide a certain a level of  companionship. I still miss my little calico cat, she slept by me and always wanted to be held!

There's nothing wrong with keeping pets (we have always had pets) but nowadays it is as Tele has said,

Apart from the commercialisation of animals and animal products (toys, beds, shampoos, etc which  are totally unnecessary and wasteful, especially when humans have no roof over their heads), there is the loss or lack of healthy human warmth and affection in this time when marriage and family life is in a state of disarray.

People use animals as replacements for children, and this is a shocking state of affairs. I am going to try again to post this photo  taken in Assisi of all places.

God meant animals to serve us not for us to serve them. We are of completely different and higher order, and if we don't keep it like that I believe we sin, though I can't give any docuмent that says such a thing. It just makes sense that God's order must be maintained.

I think in many ways pets are overdone.  It's one of the reasons why I am going into large animal medicine.

However, I have sheep and I deeply enjoy being around livestock.  Read St. John Chapter 10 for a beautiful description, right from Our Lord, of how a shepherd looks after his sheep.  I see nothing "demeaning" about bouncing with lambs in the pasture, lying down next to your cow while she is in labor, or allowing your kids to suck your fingers.  I do not allow carnivores like cats and dogs to lick me because of parasitism issues, but I really don't care if a cow or sheep is licking my arm or face.  I will be honest, I kiss lambs once in awhile, and I often go out at night under the stars, and hold little lambs close to my heart.  I care for them and they care for me by providing clothing and food for us.  I name them and they come when called.  I love them and I "give my life for them" by sacrificing myself to care for them.  For example, the 2 AM lambing in sub-zero weather.  I take sick orphan lambs to bed with me.

Even the saints took pleasure from being around animals.  I feel much closer to God lambing out ewes than doing many other things.

The problem is when people are spending $2000 on a dog that is dying and are buying Jєωelry for their cat.
The good shepherd giveth his life for his sheep.  But the hireling, and he that is not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and flieth, and the wolf catcheth, and scattereth the sheep.  A

  • Incidentally, I've come across this series, which just happens to be about anthropomorphic animals.  It's not bad.  I bought it for my Kindle around Christmas.

    Episode two seemed humorous.

I think there's Grimm's Fairytales.  I like reading those on occasion.  There's a few tales in there, I believe, that include talking animals.

Andrew Lang's Fairy books are always a hit for the kids.  You don't get anymore old-fashioned like that these days.

But then, of course, there's Aesop's Fables.

  • Canticle of the Sun
by the Seraphic Patriarch, Saint Francis of Assisi

Most High, all-powerful, all-good Lord, All praise is Yours, all glory, all honour and all blessings.

To you alone, Most High, do they belong, and no mortal lips are worthy to pronounce Your Name.

Praised be You my Lord with all Your creatures,
    especially Sir Brother Sun,
Who is the day through whom You give us light.
And he is beautiful and radiant with great splendour,
Of You Most High, he bears the likeness.

Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars,
In the heavens you have made them bright, precious and fair.

Praised be You, my Lord, through Brothers Wind and Air,
And fair and stormy, all weather's moods,
by which You cherish all that You have made.

Praised be You my Lord through Sister Water,
So useful, humble, precious and pure.

Praised be You my Lord through Brother Fire,
through whom You light the night and he is beautiful and playful and robust and strong.

Praised be You my Lord through our Sister,
    Mother Earth
    who sustains and governs us,
producing varied fruits with coloured flowers and herbs.
Praise be You my Lord through those who grant pardon for love of You and bear sickness and trial.

Blessed are those who endure in peace, By You Most High, they will be crowned.

Praised be You, my Lord through Sister Death,
from whom no-one living can escape. Woe to those who die in mortal sin! Blessed are they She finds doing Your Will.

No second death can do them harm. Praise and bless my Lord and give Him thanks,
And serve Him with great humility.  Amen.
