  • The universe is a physical thing. It is impossible for something physical to be infinite, since matter is finite by its very nature, and no amount of finite things combined can ever become infinite.

  • Galileo And Freedom Of Thought by Sherwood Taylor pg 34.

" The earliest critics of the ancient astronomy had no better grounds for their criticism( of fixed E) than had Aristotle for his assertions. Their predilection for an infinite universe & moving E was mystical, not scientific. Thus that remarkable man Nicolas of Cusa in 1440 wrote a work entitled Learned Ignorance in which he maintains that E cannot be the centre of U because U is infinite: & since E was not the centre, there is no reason to suppose it to be immobile.

Pope Eugenius IV raised no objection to the theories of Nicolas & indeed raised him to the purple after their publication. " :cowboy:

  • An infinite universe is formal heresy.

To show mankind the universe is not infinite God created the sun and stars to be seen by mankind
moving around His 'FOOTSTOOL' a fixed earth, as described in Scripture.
An infinite universe cannot rotate every day.
    Only God is infinite

We recognise that those Catholics, including ourselves in the past, who, having been taught these things throughout our ‘education’ in school and university, Catholic or not, accepted heliocentrism, natural evolution and even the possibility of aliens based on a belief these things were proven by science. So such personal heresies, as ruled by the Catholic Church, are ‘material,’ involving most Catholics today as we know. The Catholic Church makes a distinction between material and formal heresy. Material heresy means in effect ‘holding erroneous doctrines through no fault of their own’ due to inculpable ignorance so ‘is neither a crime nor a sin’ since the individual made the error in good faith. But once the truth has been explained to them, and Biblical heliocentrism is still promoted, the heresy cannot be considered material  any longer.
