  • Is it wrong to listen to classical music inspired by dance?

I know the church's stance on dance, but I wanted to know if it's wrong to listen to classical music inspired by dance or that involves dancing without it inspiring me to dance! like, for example, some ballet classics, waltzes, because when I hear that it doesn't inspire me to dance, not to mention baroque music inspired by dances

I have never heard of it as being wrong to listen to classical dance music or even folk dance music.

What exactly is "the Church's stance on dance"?

Magisterial teachings would be appreciated, but failing that, something from the Fathers of the Church, or even traditional Catholic moral theology, would suffice.

That is not to say that there are not immodest dances.  There certainly are.

  • What do you believe is “the Church’s stance on dance?”  She does not forbid all dance, just dance that is immodest or inappropriate to the person or occasion.  Some saints strictly forbade all dance because of its use in specific situations by the people in his care.  St. John Vianney forbade all dance because it had become the ruin of the simple peasant folks in his parish.  St. Francis de Sales permitted it in moderation when used by his socially prominent parishioners.  Dance, if performed modestly in the proper setting can be edifying to both dancers and those who watch.
I’m not sure I know what is meant by “classical music inspired by dance.”  Generally, classical music is considered one of the higher forms of music.  Can you give an example?  I don’t see why listening to it should be an occasion of sin.  Isn’t dance normally inspired by music, not the reverse, as you propose?

  • Some of the best classical music is based upon dance forms, some more overt than others. In pretty much all examples I can think of, there is order, restraint, and even formality (i.e., it is not unrestrained or sensuous).  I don't think there's anything wrong at all with listening, for example, to something like this...it's basically a jig:

    or this:

or this (less overt, but still based on a dance form):
