  • I get a lot of mail from Catholic organizations and charities that I end up throwing away. These letters often have pictures of Jesus, Mary, and the saints on them. I throw them in the trash. Sometimes they even end up not in the ordinary trash bin but the trash bin of my toilet (and you know what's in there) because that is where, due to lack of time, I end up reading some of my mail. Is it sacriligious for me to throw pictures of Jesus and Mary in the garbage bin and even the toilet trash bin?

  • Hard to say -- you obviously mean no disrespect to Our Lord.

Perhaps marketers should be more circuмspect about using sacred images in mass mailings!

And I don't care if it's for a seminary, monastery, etc -- it's still junk mail for those who receive it, and most of them go in the garbage can, to be covered with food scraps and worse.

I wish I had a dime for every "beggar letter" I've received from a religious organization. I'd be able to retire early. Do they think Catholics are made of money? Quite the contrary. Having one income and many children is NOT a recipe for wealth.

    They should think about that.

  • The best thing would be to burn the sadly this is not as simple as it once was when everyone had solid fuel fires.  Another option, if you can tell by the return address orother external markings that it is a letter you don't want might be to mark them to be returned to the sender and put them back in the post if your mail service has that option, I know the USPS do this.

  • I think recycle is a good option.  Similar to burning as they all get dissolved.

  •  What if you can't burn and don't recycle? Will the Lord expect us to fill our houses with Sunday church bulletins and religious spam? If someone sends me a free, beautiful picture of Our Lord or Our Lady, you can bet it won't go in the trash! But most of it is offensive in itself rather than flattering. Even the more devout stuff... like I said... can we store up a houseful?

Isn't there something in Catholic morality about grave inconveniences and unrealistic demands? If this is true of not making it to Church on Sunday, isn't it also true of not being able to save every single Catholic image?

I'd really like to know the answer, because I certainly hope I'm not offending God here. But I feel I really can't save them all.

-edit- I would add, though, that I try to throw them away in the best possible 'can' ... wherever has the least 'filth'.
I renounce any and all of my former views against what the Church through Pope Leo XIII said, "This, then, is the teaching of the Catholic Church ...no one of the several forms of government is in itself condemned, inasmuch as none of them contains anythi

  • I would just throw them in the recycling or, if you don't have recycling where you are at, throw them in a 'paper bin' separate from the rest of the garbage. Granted, it all ends up in the same place in the end, but at least you might be able to assuage your mind somewhat. No real good answer to that, sorry.  :fryingpan:

  • Perhaps if you had time, you could call up the seminary/monastery/convent and ask them to stop sending junk mail.

These groups are (at least theoretically) Catholic, and SHOULD grant your request.
