  • Reacting quickly to the death of a homeless man whose body was discovered in a doorway in Dublin, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin has offered to make diocesan buildings available as temporary shelters.

The archbishop said that he was confident that Church properties in Dublin could be made ready to shelter at least 30 people by the end of the year.

A spokesman for the archbishop said that he was “very deeply concerned about a deeply divided Dublin where on the one hand there is rejoicing at increased spending over the Christmas period and on the other hand where the number of those homeless and hungry is actually increasing.” The number of homeless people living in Dublin has reportedly tripled since the onset of the worldwide financial crisis in 2008.
