Author Topic: I caught CNN using anti-baby propaganda! (Read 806 times)

I SWEAR I saw this video before. I remember how it started -- the reporter giving the obligatory "awwww" before switching over to a video of QUINTUPLETS.

Why are they running the same story year after year? To get more propaganda mileage out of it?

I'm a family man myself, with 6 children, but I'll take 'em one at a time, please! No multiples for me. Even twins would be quite a challenge.

Who in their right mind would want 4 or 5 babies at one go? God doesn't expect that of us -- it's not His will that human beings have "litters" of children. This only happens in the modern age with fertility drugs (which are NOT God's will, by the way)

Anyhow, look at the headline -- childcare costs more than college. What's your impression after reading or skimming this article?

1. 5 babies at once! Count me out!
2. Childcare is as expensive (or even MORE expensive) as college?
3. College, which everyone says I need to escape minimum-wage hell?
4. And I'd SAVE money by choosing an easier life/better job/college education?
5. Sorry, junior, I guess I'll have to wait on having kids...

Those are the thoughts that WILL enter each person's head after reading the article. You might be Catholic and have an answer to those thoughts -- but the thoughts will present themselves nevertheless.

Not everyone has the "comebacks" that we all have to these thoughts.

This is not true at all Matthew.

Twins, triplets, quadruplets, and quintuplets have and do occur naturally, without modern fertility treatments, although anything other than twins is rare.

*Twins occur naturally in about 1 out of every 60 pregnancies.
*Triplets occur naturally in about 1 out of every 8,000 pregnancies.
*Quadruplets occur naturally in about 1 out of every 700,000 pregnancies.
*Quintupelts occur naturally in about 1 out of every 55 million pregnancies. Quite rare to be sure, but the Dionne sisters, born in 1934, are an example.

Yes, they occur once in a blue moon on their own.

Basically they are supposed to be a freak occurrence, like dwarfism or gigantism, or a pregnancy defect/complication like having conjoined (siamese) twins.

Not something you experience more often than not.

But what are your chances when you're doing IVF and/or you take fertility drugs to help the body along?

Countless orders of magnitude higher than normal. You go from your chances being "like winning the lottery" to "like hitting two red lights in a row sometime during your trip".

Anyhow, thanks for the clarification, but my point still stands.

The article (above) suggests that when you choose to have children, the photo above of 5 babies (quintuplets?) is what you're inviting into your life. That is clearly being hinted at or suggested.

You know how so many people aren't content to stick to the facts, but find the need to exaggerate? Like the people who say, "I don't want to be stuck at home with 15 kids, so I have to use birth control." They always pick an exaggerated or worst-case. I think CNN is doing the same thing.

I agree that natural multiple births--other than twins--are a rare event. I just take issue with the assertion that having multiples is not how God intended things. True, God obviously doesn't intend quadruplets or quintuplets very often at all, but He does intend them on that rare occasion.

I agree. And it's not just CNN; all of the major news outlets run stories from time to time that have the subtle (or not-so-subtle) suggestion not to have children.

The entire secular culture is geared toward encouraging smaller families as an option and is even encouraging going childless not to dedicate one's life to Our Lord but to prevent further damage to the environment.

The message is so prevalent that even in novus ordo parishes, the average family size is two. Occasionally three. The large family is the minority. It is the polar opposite of my SSPX chapel in St. Louis where the small family is the minority (we have at least three families of 10 - that I know of).

The TV networks used to be owned by catholics. Ladies testified before the state of AZ that in just 17 years, these babies are working and are tax payers. Therefore why abort? And it was like water on a duck!
