The majority of the posters here are clearly on the side of the same people who wrote this article:

It's not a coincidence that the same posters coming out here in support of the stoner culture are the same ones who show a decided lack of Catholic Sense on so many other issues.

However the new research is generating more interest in the first hypothesis; namely that cannabis use itself can cause psychosis. This research is based on studies where large numbers of people are followed through a process of questionnaires over ten to twenty years. The conclusions drawn from these statistical analyses have shown that there is an association between cannabis use by adolescents who are predisposed to mental health problems and later mental health problems.

And for anyone who points out that these studies mainly refer to links between marijuana use and adolescents, remember that we adults are the role models for the young. Kids adopt the alcohol/drug/tabacco use of their parents.

I am no more an advocate of the 'stoner' culture than I am of the alcoholic culture. One can drink wine without being a drunk and one can use MJ without being a junkie. The Bible says what it says. If you want to dispute that, take it up with Moses.

Total rubbish. Post one single Catholic source that says that the Bible is referring to marijuana in those passages. This is like something an Ozzie Osbourne fan would come up with.

i'm still not sure to think if smoking moderately..one or two hits...not impairing judgment.... is a mortal sin?

alot of people are arguing that it can't be used without completely getting high and losing reason... that is incorrect.

if i did start again it would only be moderate and not very often. is that a mortal sin if i am not abusing it ?

Dear Amariec,

The post I quote below is the best one on this whole thread. Caraffa makes an excellent point. We Catholics are called to be apart from the world, to reject the vain pleasures and amusements of the world in order to dedicate ourselves to loving and serving God. Any attachment to worldly things, whether they be possessions, money, entertainment, or even friendships and blood relations if they be harmful to us, should be avoided. Millions of good faithful Catholics got through their lives and into Heaven through the centuries without the need to "get high" and you should strive to do the same.

Quote from: Caraffa
Outside of governing law, marijuana may not be sinful per se, but it does act as a mind altering substance (harms brain cells) and its not really possible to smoke marijuana without getting high (unlike tobacco or alcohol).

I think we have to move outside of the question as to whether something is a sin and thus be the philosopher asking, which is better? Think of the type of company that you may attract. If we are looking for how far we can push it without committing sin, then we are setting ourselves up for trouble.

Go talk to a good traditional priest about this issue. He can guide you in this and other questions you may have. Asking questions of strangers on an Internet forum is not the best way to make decisions that could determine the fate of your everlasting soul.
