How long since your last 5 day Ignatian retreat?

In today's world it is important to give your soul a frequent deep cleaning, and to persevere daily in the spirit and meditations of the Ignatian exercises. 5 days is too short, but it's way better than a local 3 days, or none at all. There's a place in Ridgefield CT run by the SSPX that specializes in retreats, they are probably the best place to go for that reason. Don't put it off if you want to go to heaven. There's a lot more to getting to heaven than just thinking you are Catholic. Let's face reality, chances are most of us are much more lax in the practice of our faith than we could imagine. It's almost guaranteed unless you are a cloistered religious daily seeking perfection with the help of the community. Go while you are physically able.

You are absolutely right.

I went to two in Ridgefield over 20 years ago when Father (now Bishop) Zendejas was retreat master. They were great retreats. I’ve gone to several shorter (two/three day) SSPV retreats since that time and they were all very good. I wouldn’t suggest going to the SSPX as the orders of some of the priests there are questionable, but I haven’t checked who is there recently so It’s possible that it’s status has changed.

I think it worth the risk as long as those of questionable orders is at a minimum, as in, ask who preaches the retreats, look them up, and if 1 is doubtful, I'd avoid going to them for general confession. If they are the retreat master, then don't go, because they will likely be the one saying mass. I think Fr Violette is still there as master, an Asian priest, and possibly Fr Robinson preaches it as well. Msgr Byrnes was moved to GA. I don't think God would allow a doubtful retreat master. Word would probably get out anyway and cause a big deal and a lot of pressure on them.

Another concern is who has consecrated the hosts in the tabernacle.

I have a very soft spot in my heart for St Aloysius retreat house in San Jose CA. I have, over the years, worked through some tough times and made some major decisions as a result of retreats made there. As compromised as the SSPX may be of late, I still believe that this place, and others like it, do an immense amount of good.

We have so much to thank Archbishop Lefebvre for, including that he had the grace and foresight to make Ignatian retreats a part of the SSPX. I think this was just one of his master strokes of genius and grace. To establish retreat centres, oases where souls can go to drink cool, clear water every few years. I think one reason why for many years the SSPX boasted legions of strong, uncompromising priests was the Ignatian retreat. I miss the old days.

For some time my wife and I were on a 3-5 year rotation with retreats. I honestly could not recommend making a retreat more.

The compromises and changes in the SSPX have, over the last 12 years, made me seriously reconsider including them in my will. However, one beneficiary that I cannot (yet) bring myself to write out of my will has been the SSPX retreat house in California.
